A guy who helped form the road club I am in rides his age in miles every year. This year it was 86 miles,, and it wasn't flat. I met him when he was in his 50s and he was never fast or a great climber. He just cruises along at his own pace.

When I reached 65 I signed up for, and subsequently rode, the Markleeville Deathride so I'd have to ride double my age (130 miles) and more than double my age in hundreds of feet (16,000 feet). That was definitely a challenge.

I celebrated my 64th yesterday. 2.2 mile round-trip to the grocery store (using the MTB for extra workout) to buy two pints of almond milk fake ice cream (one vanilla, one coffee/caramel/chocolate chip) and a grass-fed, organic, no antibiotic, field-raised NY strip steak. (Because, I only eat one a year, so why not?)
Ate the fake ice cream first, because, well, like the t-shirt says, life is short--eat dessert first. Was initially miffed that, forgetting my reading glasses, I accidentally bought fake instead of real, but it was actually pretty good.
Steak was excellent. But holy smokes, $24 a pound.
On topic: The old forum standard is ride a mile for every year. I don't recall every doing that. I've done big rides as the mood strikes. I'm not much into formalized milestone stuff. Although I do enjoy seeing them whiz by.
For a real treat, go on one of those circumnavigation of the Big Island of Hawaii rides. They run seven days, 300-400 miles up to however long and far that you like. I chose a full-custom ride, doing it in nine days because I wanted a couple of two-night stays. Toughest, yet most enjoyable time I've ever had on a bike.

I am turning 63 this Friday. 60 mile rides are not a big deal so I am thinking maybe 100 miles.

I celebrated 60 with a new bike as I've already mentioned. But, I also celebrated 60 on my Ducati by blowing off a Porsche 911 hitting 140 mph indicated. Totally anti-social I know . But, it was in a remote area. Not suggesting it just a historical fact in my life.

I was chatting with a friend last night following a ride who’d done that one, says it’s no joke.

A lot can still be done at 60. I turned 60 last September and did my first of four centuries with my last one completed in 7:04 with a ride time of 6:30.
Father Time will eventually win this contest but for now he can kiss my cans. 🤣

For my 60th I planned to ride north of the 60th parallel. The closest place to do that was to ride from Edmonton to Hay River. Mrs. Dan said go and have fun...Then I priced a flight from Hay River back to Edmonton. Those bush plane flights are expensive. So I switched from the closest place to the cheapest place. I picked the Shetland Islands.
Suddenly Mrs. Dan decreed that there was no way I was going to go to Shetland alone and leave her here in Fargo. And for the two of us that meant getting a tandem. So that was it. Buy a tandem, then ride north of the 60th. It seems like 70 is not too far away, which might mean a ride from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay and back. Not likely to be on the tandem.

Greetings everyone,
Been a long time since I've been here.
I come looking for ideas.
I've been a life-long cyclist and am turning 60 this Summer.
I'm looking for ideas to commemorate this birthday on the bicycle.
Looking for something challenging, Probably multi day. Some travel but not a whole lot.
Anyone here have a big birthday and did something creative on the bike to celebrate it?
Thank you

Ride your bike to an "early bird" dinner (I love the ribs at the Twin Anchors Restaurant & Tavern in Old Town and the huge slabs of beef at Morton's Steakhouse). Then, for something challenging, even if the news reports are only half true, just riding around Chicago and living through the ride is a worthy challenge.
SERIOUSLY, I hope you have (or had) a great birthday.

600k brevet - ten times age in km or 6x in miles. Technically two rides since sleeping around 400k is normal, but who's checking?

I turned 60 in May of this year. Got in as many rides in May as I could before putting up the bike for the summer (too hot and humid here and I have breathing problems) so I will have to wait until this autumn for a cycling vacation. Probably a gravel ride like I did in Michigan last Oct.

Thanks for reminding that didn't do anything cycling related on my 60th. I'm also a water skier and ice skater, so I skied on 30 things for my birthday. Most interesting was cooler lid and cookie sheet.

In my 60th year, I set three goals for the year. My birthday is in winter and it did not occur to me to do a ride in snow and ice. I think 60 is a big one.
I wanted to 1) complete Paris Brest Paris 2) Break 20 minutes for 10 miles 3) Do a sub 4 hour 100 mile ride solo.
Due to health issues, I never got around to 100 miler but did do a training ride of 100Km in 2:30 on less than good conditions

What a great thread! I usually skip over the 50plus, as the couple of times I did peer at the threads, several were very 'woe is me' and folks comparing doctors, rehab, medications, and the like.

Whatever it is, do something! I did nothing when I turned 50, did nothing when I turned 60, and despite my plans to do a metric century in years (i.e. do something when I was 62 and change), I did nothing then.
Life is short ... take any opportunity to celebrate it.

Its interesting to hear what you old timers have done to celebrate your 60th birthdays.
I won't hit 60 for two more weeks.....
I've been back to riding regularly for about a year now. I'm planning on doing 60 miles on my birthday (8/3) on the nearby C&O Canal. The farthest I've riden so far has been 32 miles, but at speed (well, for this old dude). So, 60 seems within my grasp. I'm going North 30, u-turn and back South the other 30. Stay tuned.

I've never done the Everest Challenge. I always intended to but something got in the way every year. Just another reminder ... do things while you can because nothing lasts forever!
Maybe we should plan a trip and self-support it sometime. I'll bet we would talk at least a few fools into it.
BTW ... this is the Everest Challenge:
