I have a Schwinn CrissCross Hybrid running the Suntour XC 7 speed stuff on my fendered dynamo-hubbed winter commuter. Actually once cleaned up, it does a decent job. You might try it before you make the switch.

Holy ****. I just found a Strida Mark I for $40 and bought it tonight. It just needs a new top bracket (racks), although the existing piece is functional for the time being. Pictures tomorrow!

Its an interesting group. I've never had trigger shifters like that from Suntour pass through my hands before. The only problem is that the RD has a steel cage as well as a few other touches that don't inspire confidence. I guess XCT was lower on the totem poll. I'm leaning towards flipping it since I have a bunch of keeper bikes that fit this niche already so I'll probably keep it original and just give it an overhaul. After that I'll really know how well this group shifts because as of now it shifts like garbage, though I'm going to chalk that up the the chain which the OP said was original.

Googled that thing and now I'm intrigued.

So the other day a friend stopped by and said I have something here you may like. He told me he found a Cruiser he wanted on our local Swip Swap and when he got there and said he would buy it the lady asked if he would take another bike with it, said it was her sons bike he no longer wants. This is what she gave him,





A 1997 Bianchi Veloce, full Campy Veloce 8spd. Bike looks a little beat up but everything works and I think it will clean up to be a great rider. I have been building and flipping bikes for a long time and this is the first time I have gotten a full Campy bike just fall into my lap, my buddiy paid $80 for the pair and I paid him half plus $20 which was less then what he paid for both. He didn't want to take anything at first but I demanded he take it. I have been teaching him about bikes and I am taking him under my wing showing him how to work on bikes.

Saved from either the dump or becoming a fixie, was this Van Rossem, today.

But, it might just as well turn out to be a real nice catch. Note the nod to De Rosa in the way Joop van Rossem put his name on the frame. Van Rossem was the Dutch concession holder for De Rosa at the time.

The frame itself came from Martens, and is quite similar to this Giovanni, albeit a couple of years older. A lot of of rust spots, but nothing terminal at first sight. The Cinelli stem is stuck and probably a write-off, but the Campagnolo headset and BB look and feel fine.

Had a bike shop wanting to unload this from their store room. Hardly unridden from 2010 as it appears to have sucked the rear dr into the wheel soon after the owners used it. Common occurrence with the POS Shimano low end units found on these. Nice retro steel frame and the price was good(free).

Saturday I was being proper and adult and helping to clear out the house by taking a load of stuff to the Salvation Army. As I was getting out of the car to get the first box, Calvin the muscle-guy of the operation said, "We got a bike in and it looks like a good one."

Well, dang. So I unloaded all the old clothes and kitchen utensils and decor items and parked the car and went in and was greeted by this poor Univega Arrowpace. And though I told myself, no, I'm not gonna do this, I don't need another bike, we're gonna be moving soon, do you really want to cram one more bike into the storage space you're gonna have to rent for an undisclosed time ..." so I told Calvin, "if it's still here Monday." Of course, I say this maybe 30 minutes before closing.

So this morning I'm out overseeing some work on our next home, and on the way back into town I swing by. Calvin's not there, and at first I don't see the bike, and I'm about to walk out thinking, "it's okay, it wasn't meant to be," and I turn and see it behind a mobile clothing rack. So I bought it, and here it is as found. I am happy to report the seatpost is NOT stuck, though the pedals and stem may require some serious effort. I figure, worst case scenario, I at least got one of my favorite 80s saddles in good nick for $24.99, along with a set of Dia-Compe sidepulls, and maybe a few other bits. And it occurs to me that I've never owned a Univega before, and why not? But the odds are it'll get mothballed for yet another edition of the Clunker Challenge. Or I'll get bored, or something.

When I first began repping in the '80s I had a sample Zebra that was identically equipped. My brother-in-law was interested in it so I sold it to him after a couple of laps in my territory. He never rode it and told me a couple of years later that he donated it. Turns out the bike showed up at one of my dealers, a guy who frequently found bikes left in front of his shop. He'd rehab some of them and sell them off. The Zebra had not been touched yet and looked to be in exactly the condition of your Univega, so I did the only thing I could...I bought it and gave it to my brother-in-law. He was painfully amused, as you might guess.

1984 Miyata Commuter all original, (ok the basket is an add on that will be removed) even the tires. This bike has seen minimal use and will be a winter overhaul project

LOL. I live in Cruiser Country and just yesterday picked up 10 Cruisers and a new never built Wally World 27.5 wheeled bso. These Schwinns can make a good cruiser with work, I have had a bunch like this have the same damage and every other one I get have the brazeon Brake posts in different places making it very hard or not at to get the brakes working.

OMG that front rack. I would so harvest that to another bike. You Canadians always got the coolest city bikes.

I wonder about that rack, it seems to be more for support for the front light and it also protects the dynamo!

+1 I would agree the 7x3 acushift stuff actually works pretty good on MTB with softer gearing I have gotten ti to work good with Suntour Acushift freewhells and Shimano Freewheels. If the pulleys on the RD are good I would get a new better quality 8speed chain and see how it works before you change everything.

On bikes of this level the cheapo Linear pull post brakes actually work pretty good and are fairly easy to setup adjust. There 3x better than cheapo disk brakes which are starting to show up on lesser Cruisers and MTB shaped objects.

Some Strida Mark I pics. I will post a new thread about it shortly. Shockingly nice ride and comfortable seat. Aluminum, belt drive, single speed, drum brakes, fully functional except top joint, and only $40. All it needed for now was a rear tube replacement, but I also ordered a 3D printed top joint replacement (white ASA body with black ABS letters).

When I was Fred flint stone’in it home the brakes worked very well. I guess being the first year for a new model they tried hard to make it “Schwinn Quality”.

A LBS closed, not the one I frequent. No one wanted the left over Schwinn. So it made its way to me through a friend.
