My youngest daughter and I go to the dump, to scavenge, a couple of times a week. Needless to say, I look for old road bikes (there was a youth's Glider road bike there today, a Fuji mountain bike and a Raleigh mountain bike, none of which were of interest to me. I have found lots of vintage bikes at the dump, over the years including this old Legnano that came to me from the dump just a couple of weeks ago...


But today, no bikes were there that interested me (fact is not many have showed up since the pandemic started) but something else was.

My daughter approached me, looking strange and insisting that she had to put the antique pottery, that she had found, down. I immediately thought that she was experiencing pain in her right shoulder (damaged it several years ago). She was actually shaking and saying "I hope this is real"...


And, it turned out that the $1000.00 CND bill she found tucked between the pages of a discarded Bible was/is the real deal. I love dump hunting!

I would agree but where I live, in a somewhat remote part of Norrthwestern Ontario, download speeds are incredibly slow. It would take quite a while for all of the pages of "Found At The Dump" to load so that I could add this tidbit of a find. And, while on that subject, I tend to avoid threads with pages and pages of posts for the same reason. I realize that this is my problem and should not waste other people's time. I did just try to delete this thread but there was no option for me to do so. I will exercise prudence in the future.

These Canadian mille notes were phased out many years ago, the reason given that drug dealers were the only ones using them. Still legal tender.

It hard to judge the condition from the photo but that should be worth over $1000 CDN, possibly significantly more. I'd get it asppraised.

That would be good if so, since the face value has lost so much of its buying power since the note was printed. Appraised value may even beat inflation. 35 years of inflation has shaved off over half of the face value's buying power.

For what it is worth (pardon that punny play on words) my daughter is going to frame the $1000 bill. She has already looked into collectable value and it is worth more than the banks will give her for it. And, speaking of banks - pooey stinko!!!

I was given an ounce of solid gold, purchased from a Canadian bank years ago, and the ounce, sealed in its original clear plastic sleeve, bears a serial number. I needed money, some time ago, and went to cash the ounce in a my bank. At the time, gold was valued at $1,400.00 an ounce (mine was 99.99% pure gold). The poosy stinko bank would only give me $800.00 for the ounce, insisting on$600.00 to have it appraised. Good grief and double pooey stinko.

We went to the dump today and guess what we found? Nothing worth dragging home - c'est la vie.

Edit: legal tender status revoked January 2021. The bank will graciously grant you face value but they cannot be used for regular commerce. The aftermarket seems a bit low as well: $1300 seems about typical so you are talking a 30% gain from when the note was issued.

Wow, that is quite the find! Down here in the hustle & bustle of the GTA they don't allow people to wander through and find stuff, nor will they allow you to take a bike out. They collect them and take them to a local coop (which one I'm not sure, as they wouldn't say and there aren't many around here) to be refurbished and given or sold for a low cost to those who can't afford to purchase. Good cause for sure but I wonder if people would appreciate the nice C&V road bikes people throw away?

I also wonder how many bikes really get thrown away these days around here? based on what I see on FB marketplace or Kijiji, people try and sell them, tag them as C&V and ask outrageous prices when they probably should have left them to be taken to the dump.

I have a Collins Spanish/English dictionary on my bookshelf, containing crisp new bills from Guatemala, Mexico, Belize, and possibly Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The Honduran bills were so well used as to be almost unreadable. I wonder what will become of them. And this reminds me, I have my dad's silver dollar collection stashed inside a false front shelf. I should probably do something about that before long. Morgans and Liberties.

I'm not nearly as conversant about Canadian bank notes as I am about Canadian bicycles. However, I do know that the photo was taken from the wrong side and that the serial number is printed on the other side.

Thunder Bay is about 300 miles north of me. I am going to have to stop by this dump when I get up that way which is once or twice a year.

I did not think to take a picture of the serial number side but I did look at that side. My daughter has already looked the serial number up and, I believe, the bill was produced in1988, The $1000 bill is the real deal. Funny thing is, I saw the box of books and passed on looking. No biggie because seeing how excited my daughter was/is makes my loss worth it to me. Dump day tomorrow - yeha!
