1973 Raleigh Competition Frame, fork, headset
Im selling a 1973 Raleigh Competition frame and fork. The headset and binder bolt are included (will be cleaned, lubed and installed before shipping.) The frame is full Reynolds 531, stays and fork blades as well. This frame has the cool Capella lugs, sloping fork crown and rapid taper stays.
My plan was to build this as it is and ride it, but I’ll be frank, the paint is rough! There are no dents or tube damage to speak of and the tube walls are all solid. I did remove 99% of the rust with naval jelly. I also treated the inside of the frame with frame saver. If the paint damage is not to your liking, well…. could be a great candidate for modification. I tried my best to take honest and accurate photos. I can provide more on request.
The seat tube measures 60cm c-c
the top tube measures 57cm c-c
$125 plus actual shipping via bike flights (Ohio to California is approximately $46.00. Less if you are closer).

I think the price is fair.
I'm curious about the fork, the crown looks like it may be much later than 1973. Is it original to the frame?

Yes, I believe it is original to the frame. I purchased this as a complete bike about a year ago. If you look at the picture of my other 73 competition, it has the same sloping fork crown. It also matches the catalog specs for the 73 year.

Fairly priced if it was 22.5" to 23" I'd grab it.

Ugh. I so wish this were 1-1.5cm longer in the top tube.
Looks great, considering, and a very fair price.

Photos of clearances, 27 x 1-1/4 paselas for reference.
IMPORTANT NOTE: this is another 73 Raleigh Competition that I own, not the one that I listed for sale. I’m showing clearances as I imagine both are similar.

I totally forgot that this had weirdo dropouts! If it helps tip anyone, I have a Huret Jubilee rear derailleur in fantastic condition that I was considering listing for sale.

Dave Levy of TiCycles modified my derailleur hanger to the ISO/Campy/SunTour/Shimano standard, Along with a lot of other work that was more important to me so I paid no attention to what he did. I think he just cut a curved piece of steel and brazed it on. Of course, do that and it's repaint time. A given with all the work mine needed.

Per buyer request, here is a thread showing the condition of the frame at the time that I bought it in April 2021. I had intended to keep it as my own rider, but I found a complete replacement in a 2nd 73 Raleigh Competition:
https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...ld-thread.html
I think it shows, as rough as the paint is now.... it was way worse before. I removed the rust with naval jelly and polished/waxed the remaining paint.

Buyer of the frameset here! Thanks especially to the seller, who was very kind to provide all the images and information above.
Very happy with the purchase, though I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the frame - build it up immediately, or, since the condition in my opinion warrants it, proceed with a "Weiglesque" conversion to 650b with canti studs, etc. As is typical with "bike boom" Raleighs, the lugwork needs some (read: a lot) of attention, at which point I would also just have various braze-ons added, as well, as I'm personally not a big fan of all the clamp-on elements a period-correct build would require. It also doesn't help that I have two other touring frames from the 70s with equal allure, one of which (an Eisentraut) also needs some attention from a framebuilder.
Nevertheless, there's just some kind of allure to Raleighs of this period though, I can't quite put my finger on it. The tire clearances with the tapered chain stays and Davis sloping crown fork are quite insane - this frame makes 32c tires look like 23s. No I just need a mink blue MK.II Professional and a chartreuse International from the same period to complete my Raleigh stable!

Whatever you do with the bike , I'm sure you will enjoy it. I think the black Competition and The Mink blue Pro are both iconic for Raleigh.

And also, of course, never knowing if you're going to get a "good one" - there's kind of a surprise or chance element involved in collecting Raleighs from this period. I'm happy about the condition of this frameset because that means I feel a bit more at ease with modifying it!

I think that's it - there's something iconic about these bikes, but also there's this strange duality between being both mass-produced items but also kind of eccentric and weird. Both workmanly and somehow rarefied.

I picked one up awhile back with pretty decent paint but someone had cut the Huret deraiulleur hanger off so I get to replace it with a "universal" Campy hanger with no remorse. Mine will be mostly period correct and with as much "European" content as possible. I'm anxious to get it done to see if it lives up to everything I've read about the ride quality of this series of Competition. If they're everything I'm told they are I may have a bunch of other bikes for sale LOL.
Picture is from the seller's the ad, I asked if he'd sell just the frame set and he said that's how he preferred to sell it. I drove 4 hours round trip to get it and I was definitely NOT disappointed when I finally had it in hand. He was going to build a SS/FG out of it but found a "better" frameset. He's not the one that hacked the hanger off, that was done before he got it.
