Could always be as simple as 3ttt offering low cost brand decoration- pantographing, saddle decoration, stamped bars.

Your Cliff Claven-type is simply repeating "what he heard", and doing his part to ensure the continuation of what is basically a long-standing urban legend, if you will. I've heard the same story at various times in my life and have found nothing with which to back up the claim when I've gone looking.

Ooh! I want to hear that one.
At the age of 18 I exasperated the hell out of Peter Rich by insisting that I needed a taller bike than he wanted to sell me. He was right of course.
I ended up going to another shop and ordering a custom 26" Bob Jackson that was about an inch and a half too big for me.
