you do the best builds. And they are in my size…I get a lot of inspiration from them
my mechanic skills are limited or maybe it’s patience . Especially when it comes to setting up cants that were spaced for 27” wheels with a modem 700 build. I have followed the Kool Stop advice in this thread for my voyagers. Better. But still not great for me. I happen to have some tektro 559’s on hand. Will give those a go. The unused canti posts may bother. But not as much as being hesitant to build the bike cause I don’t like setting them Up.

Setting up cantis for a 700C wheel conversion can be tricky, and I find it more a product of 1) the canti post height relative to the 27" or 700C wheel's brake track and 2) the type of canti brake used. Bridgestones and Univegas, at the very least, have their posts pretty high up when compared to the brake track 'height' of their original 27" wheels. This makes going to a 700C wheel pretty much a no-go. My Voyageur SP is like that in front, so it's a 50/50 proposition in my eyes. If using the period correct cantis where the brake pad has considerably pivot capability, then that will make a 700C conversion a cinch. If "slot style" pad adjustment units like newer ones (CR720s) (or V-brake or side pull caliper) are used, that may not even work for the original 27" wheels as many of those were designed with lower post heights with a wider spread between them (80mm).
Unused canti posts would be weird for me, too, but if I like the ease of setup and the power of the dual pivots, then I'd be amenable to the solution as well.
I fit 700x42s (nominal, 38mm actual on MA2 rims) on the 720 before, though naturally the calipers don't open wide enough for those--not their fault as that is a massive tire.
To reiterate what I initially said, the cantis work just fine on my Voyageur, and the only real issue is required hand effort thanks to the stiff canti arm springs. If its stopping my 210ish lb self down monsterously steep roads for blocks at a time, I'd call that plenty effective. Dual pivots in my experience clamp down a bit quicker and easier. Anyway, ride your favorite brakes, I'll ride mine, and everyone will ride theirs and we'll all be happy.

the Tektro 559 Long Reach wouldn't clear the Canti posts in the rear so - gulp - I cut the rear posts off. Tough decision for a new old stock frame and I will understand if you all think less of my build - but the intent is to build this one to ride and enjoy and I hope to do all the work myself. I have yet to find a bike shop in my area that wants to hang parts on old frames and as stated, I stink at setting up Canti's.
This is a 1985 (1984 color) Schwinn Voyageur frame that I bought as a NOS Frame Set. it shipped to me in its original box (pictures earlier in this thread) and was shipped originally from Japan.
It was badged on Saturday February 23, 1985. "Carless Whisper" by Wham (George Michael) was your #1 song and Bobby Knight threw a chair across the court in a game vs Purdue
It is currently wearing 700x40 Maxxis ramblers. it will get a 2x10 drivetrain, most likely with bar end shifters and a 50/34 compact crankset.
(for those interested, behind it is a very clean 1987 Schwinn Tempo - its getting set up as a 1x10 with a 39T crank and a 11-32 Cassette. its wearing 700x28 Panracer Paselas, 28's is all it would take in that frame. This should be one of my lighter weight restomods and I look forward to getting it completed and on the road.

There was a moment of regret as I picked up the cut off posts off the floor but its done... they are gone. I will never fool with a set of Cantilever Brakes on this Frame Again.
I know, not a good reason some - but many of you prob wouldn't build a frame like this as a restomod with a compact crankset and dual pivot calipers either. Me? I think it's going to be one of my best builds yet.

the short answer is I already had the new set of tektro 559's and admittedly didn't measure the reach needed before the cut. I assumed I needed the long reach to accommodate the 700-40 tire selection.

Just picked it up a few weeks ago. Had the LBS put Kool Stops on it, and I put Shimano 324s on it. Found a Blackburn vintage Low Rider front rack and it's on the way.

Found another survivor today in my size. 1991 25". Only non-original part is the stem. Original tires will need to go, but they are surprisingly not completely crumbling yet. Original seat in good condition is surprising as well.

(Post) fatigued Cyclone hinge.
Unfortunately, it took some paint with it when it went
These are the options I'm leaning toward (in order top to bottom for preference). Any insights in choosing between the three? Also the rear derailer is the same 1st gen Cyclone, so I'm thinking about finding the matching FD eventually since it's worked a charm until today.

Having said that any of the FDs posted above will work well.

I think unlike the first generation Mountech RD, the Mountech FD is generally well regarded.
I kinda remember [MENTION=174646]The Golden Boy[/MENTION] being a fan of the Mountech FD.
Having said that any of the FDs posted above will work well.
All good choices in my opinion.

The regular MII Cyclone FD will work for a triple- I've used it with a 50-38-28 triple- and I'm sure there are thousands and thousands of people that have done it.

Couple teaser pics for an upcoming build thread I plan on posting. I was given a rather ratty 25” 1980 11.8. During paint prep, I realized the right rear seat stay had a couple cracks. LBS had no local frame builder references that would take it on.
So, I proceeded. Figured experience would pay dividends for my next project.
If the rest of the parts come together as nicely as the paint, I’ll be pleased.
I buggered up the head badge during removal. Anyone have a NOS badge taking up space in their garage?

FD replaced Mk-II
I finally got the Cyclone Mk-II installed & it works great - nice & smooth. I slight twitch has developed in my right eye, but I'm sure that will go away after a bit (or when I can find a gen 1 Cyclone FD).
Every time I get back on this bike, I remember how smooth & pleasant the ride is.
