Araya Road 821 followed me home
Found on the local marketplace, originally found in IL.
As found, hoods gone, tubular's shot, needs everything.
Frame mostly nice, although decals on down and top tubes are long gone.
Dura-Ace EX mostly nice.
The pics (as found), and a brochure I found posted here by xpacpal1x a while ago.

I love the Dura Ace on this bike , it just goes well with the theme. I don't know if someone did the color treatment on the components or if the bike came that way but a nice touch. It looks like it was too tall for the previous owner .....but just right for me!!

Absolutely beautiful. I love early eighties Japanese high end bikes. If it was a few sizes smaller, I´d be envious.

Likely me who posted that brochure. I owned one new back in the 1980s (red also)…was a great bike and yours looks like all original parts, except the yellow cable housings and black bar tape (original was dark red to match the frame)…should be Araya tubular rims. Maybe a bit light tubing for really large frames…mine was a large frame, too. Was a really light bike from what remember. Your looks more aged than used, as there’s hardly any wear on that front chainring. Nice find.

The Araya tubulars are still on it. The tires will be replaced after I handle the spoke issues, and hub clean and lube.

I'm guessing that's a 25". I wonder what the TT length is on the 23".

Does it have a standard format Araya serial number ("ARAYA (Japan): ARYMyxxxxx")?
It looks very similar to my '81-82 SR Professional, whose manufacturer I've never been able to track down (but not Araya, per s/n).

Original 13-21 Uniglide cassette replaced with Hyperglide filed to fit Uniglide freehub using the original 13T locking cog, so 13-28 now. 42T inner chainring replaced with 39T.
BL-7200 levers needed hoods, I'm using SOMA Campy gum hoods trimmed slightly to allow full lever action.
Original bearings in hubs, headset and BB were all in good shape. Simple cleaning and re-lube.
Re-cabled and added Kool Stop Dura pads.
No damage to seatpost or Nitto Stem.
I'm working on decals for the top and down tubes, but that's going to take some time.

Awesome. I'd be thrilled to find that bike in my size.

xpacpal1x mentions the maroon suede bar tape. A custom deep red or maroon leather sleeve cover would work very nicely with all the red DA accents.

Bar tape
I’d try this…in fact, maybe original bar tape was cloth, not suede, but certainly matched the seat. Anything else might not look right. https://www.ebay.com/p/1103897530

Pedal to the medal
beautiful bike and great job on cleaning it up. Just be mindful of water getting into the seat tube if you get rained on. You may already be aware, but my heart wouldn't let me not mention it for such a beautiful bike. Almost looks like cromovelato paint...

I don't think it's quite as nice as cromovelato, but it is a nice red.

xpacpal1x Here is the Newbaum's cloth tape compared to the seat.

It looks about the same compared to the brochure page above. The saddle has faded.
