Ha, a 3+ year old revived thread about c&v pops up so my interest gets me to click on it. I then see eja's frame and parts and wonder 'why are the shifter hoods removed?...thats a lot of work just for a picture' Then I see my post from over 3 years ago.
At least I am consistent.

I consider my two 1990 Cannondales to be classics, but I doubt most here would agree.
One is the crit model road bike all 105 stuff. I rode it probably 100k miles or so, raced it way back in the day, and did an ultra light tour camping and cooking from San Diego to Pensacola in more recent years. Some of the parts are no longer original, but most are other than the fork that was the victim of a crash and the back wheel that I want to get around to replacing with something close to suitable. Oh and the rims... The terrible wolbers didn't last long and were replaced by Mavic open pros which I will stay with. Lots of comments/attention from other old timers along the way when I ride it. I'd like to get it back to fully original other than the rims (I just feel like the open pros belong on the bike).
The other is a mountain bike and all original except that it gets swapped between drop bars and the original flat bar setup. I have done a mixed surface tour in it and like the crit bike it attracts many comments from old timers who fondly remember riding one just like it.

My 1988 Trek 560 is about to turn 35 years old. Is it a vintage or a classic? It looks like something from the bottom of a dumpster. I am about to mess with it by getting it powder coated a non-original color, so it doesn't look like the wreck it is.

This leaves me confused. I have a definitely vintage bike (1980 Trek 510), but it's set up as a 3 speed townie. I have two bikes by Peter Mooney with paint inspired by the bikes of my youth, but they were made in 2000 and 2002 with Brifterized Ergo 10 of the period.
To tell the truth, I find myself here because current bicycle culture seems an alien thing to me filled with ugly bikes, watts, zwift, and strava. I find none of this inspirational.
Do I have a home?

Classic 90's GT aero edge
My new favorite bike is now done.
craiglist find a year ago. New paint, added stuff i had in box bike is fast rides well 28c tires very happy.

Absolutely, one thing that seems to sometimes not get enough cred is some KOF builders, Mooney being one of the greats and never a bad call.

Surly still offers one bike, complete or frameset, with or for cantilever or V rim brakes and having downtube shifter bosses.

I tried 10-speed but gave up on the newer technologies and now all of my bikes run on 8-speed chain although some have 9-speed derailleurs.

I tend to focus on the classic design more than actual vintage bikes, because the appeal for me is riding something that is mechanically simple and looks good. I have no interest in the latest carbon framed, hydraulic braked bikes. Brands like State, Linus, Handsome, Surly, and various models in the BikesDirect’s family are what I go for precisely because they are classically styled with some mechanical updates.
Actual classics would be great. But I won’t build one up. I am happy to have access to bikes that at least look the part and use the right materials and components:
Rim brakes rule.
Steel is real.
A three speed IGH is all I need.
