South side walk definitely closed for replacement of suspender ropes and walkway also rehabilitation of the main cables.
Adding pedestrian ramps that provide access for the disabled and easier access to walkways, new guardrails and both tower entrances will be enhanced.
All this will take no less than 3 to 4 years maybe more. It started as of now.
The word is south walkway will be more pedestrian oriented.

Rode it for the first time today. Agree that it's impressive, especially those switchbacks on the Jersey side! I was left feeling a little conflicted though. On the one hand, yes it's a much nicer, easier ride to cross the bridge now. OTOH, this renovation must have cost a fortune, and for what, really? You could already ride across the GW and it wasn't a horrible experience at all. Think of all the other projects they could have done with that money which would have helped riders more--actually breaking new ground for bicycle infrastructure, connecting paths that desperately need to be connected, putting bike paths on bridges and roads that don't currently have any at all, etc.
My humble opinion.

I finally got back to NYC and have now had a chance to ride back & forth across the new Northwalk path four times.
I will concede that it is indeed an improvement over the old south path, as well as the old north path.
But I'm disappointed that it isn't more of an improvement. Yes, they got rid of the ~147 stairs on the old north path, thank you very much. And yes it looks more like an actual destination, a linear park, than the old ultra-utilitarian (at best) north or south paths.
The biggest complaints about the old south path were
- that 180° hairpin turn on the NY side...so now we get two 180° hairpin turns on the NJ side!
- the four 90° turns with limited sightlines required at each vertical tower...so now they've relaxed the angles without improving the sightlines, which only encourages cyclists to go around at even higher speeds, still blindly!
- the bottlenecks at each end where the path narrows around the suspension cable terminations...so now, oops, still there, no improvement. Might be even more of a bottleneck now.
tbh my biggest disappointment is that they widened the path...but then moved the vertical cables inward so that the net width is even narrower than previously! :::facepalm:::
ugh... well, it is what it is. As I said, at least it's an improvement.
