With my tubed tires during my sweeping hay-day, I never got a flat when I swept, but the flats would be sneak up in less than obvious road debris situations.

I've been doing it for years. Pretty natural instinct. It is disturbing to have panniers and not be able to do it.
I don't use the tire savers/wipers, although Dad had them on his bike.

Tube tires, never thought otherwise and never was told and I took up the habit. So yes do it for that purpose and do know. Voodoo useless? Maybe, I have felt glass come off before. Glove hand. Or a bottle. Or gel wrapper. Usually do the bottle to avoid glass in a hand should I succeed.
My tubeless off road tires, nah, that’s too often to be doing that.

Yeah when riding my fendered tubed bike I get frustrated when I can’t do the sweep.
