grips for French 23.5 mm handlebars
Hi,
I'm looking for replacement grips for original handlebars on a c.mid-1970s Peugeot mixte. So I'm in to the fun world of old French standard sizing. As best I can measure (without calipers handy), the grip-end diameter is 23.5 mm, which Sheldon Brown and others say would be a French size.
Are there any grips out there that would fit this size handlebar?
From reading back through the archives it sounds like the Rustine rubber grips would have been able to get on, and would look the part, but it seems like those are impossible to find now.
As an alternative, has anyone had luck double-wrapping this size bar with grip tape instead? I can't tell if I would wind up with a too-skinny-feeling grip.
Thanks for any advice!!

If so I have stretched standard diam (22.2mm) grips over french 23.5mm bars in the past .
Use a bit of slippery stuff and it shouldnt be an issue ?
Way back when we used dishwash liquid to get them on . Have to wait for them to dry though .
Also have used contact glue ,but you need to be quick or the stick halfway !
Just my two pennies worth
Post some pics of the mixte when you can please

Some Peugeot mixtes came with black cloth tape wrapped bars with Velox rubber plugs. I restored one for my late wife and the tape ran up from the bar plug to within about 6 inches of the stem and the adjacent engraving. The single layer tape felt fine but it certainly could be doubled.

I've used Fizik MIcrotex double wrapped on upright bars, and found it quite comfortable.

I manufacture and sell grips (Thompson Classic), and some of my customers have had success getting my 7/8" ID (22.23 mm) grips over larger bars by soaking them in hot water. My ball end grips would look great on a vintage mixte.

I just use whatever cushiony bartape I can find. These are 23.8 bars.
