It was a dreadful thought though. Most definitely black or brown (orange) with this paint.

I briefly had blue hoods on a bicycle with similar colour scheme. They just didn't look right at all, it would only be much worse if the handlebar tape was blue as well. Could see that with a white / creme paintjob or brown, perhaps.
Currently I changed the hoods to honey / brown colour. Much better.

Hi - quick check with the verniers 26mm top tube , 28mm seat tube ,25mm steerer
Seat post looks to be a 26.4mm . Bottom bracket not checked as yet . (feels ok)

I have a later one with chevron decal (1987ish) that I am pretty positive is not french thread .

All good fun .

This bike was hanging on the wall in Talbots Cyclery since it was new. It's never been ridden. I have never ridden it either! I installed different tires, and made a decaleur for the handlebar bag since I took these photos. 700C wheels, it's a sportif model with all the bells and whistles.

My new (old) 1972 Peugeot PX50. So, I tried.... I really, really tried. I tried to talk myself out of buying this for the better part of a week. It showed up on SF CL and sat there. I did not need another french bike, but damn it's clean and almost all original! It has the Simplex chain guard, but I had to remove it as the delrin on the Simplex front derailleur was cracked. A Suntour Compe V is doing stand in duty until I source a fresh one.
Lighting is not currently working, so that will be a few new rabbit holes for me to go down. It has the original Michelin 650b tires and steel Rigida rims as well!
The irony inherent in this is that it was manufactured as an everyman's randonneuring bicycle, and I will most likely only use it for around town stuff.

That bike is beautiful. I dunno if I'd try to source another delrin FD though. I'd be tempted to keep the suntour FD and ditch the delrin downtube shifters.

I hear ya! It's kind of a slippery slope with bikes like this one. What's so cool is the OGness of it, but what's not cool is the rickety-assed Frenchness of some of the parts.

Agreed. Actually most of French parts are very good, just not the delrin shifters and front derailleur. I'd get an aluminum french front derailleur and shifters and call it a day.

I've probably posted these before but I have 2 French bikes I ride regularly and one I need to build. One thing I appreciate about French bikes is that it is relatively easy to mod the gearing. With my Peugeot PXN 10, I replaced the 144bcd stronglight 106 crank (which is a beautiful crank) with an 86 bcd stronglight crank of the same era running 50/38 rings. I swapped out the original 13-26 6 speed freewheel for a 14-28 freewheel as the simplex RD that came stock on the bike has plenty of capacity (it is rated up to 30 teeth). I had to adjust the RD a bit so it swung back a bit after I took these pics so the RD is not quite set up right (Simplex RDs have good adjustability). The Motobecane Grand Record has more than its share of paint crackling which is not unusual for this era Motobecane bike. I installed a Nervar crank with 50/36 rings and a 14-28 5 speed Suntour freewheel and replaced the campagnolo RD with a Suntour Vx RD. It's an upgrade over the campy which could handle the 14-28 if I shoved the wheel all the way back in the drop outs. One thing I appreciate about the 70s Moto GRs is how fat of a tire you can fit. I'm running 700 x 35c Schwalbe Mondial tires comfortably. I figure this bike will make a fine Cino rider if I ever make it up to MT to do that ride. The last bike is a 70s era Mercier 300 that I need to build one of these days.

have never seen this model carried by a U.S. stockist

puhleeze lower stem before attempting to ride - serious safety risk with so little engagement with steerer

if stem needs to be that high for comfort that is fine; just replace with a taller one than what came OEM

the MAFAC guidonnet levers with their plastic are near to useless; if you would like to retain guidonnets suggest to change to the CLB which are much more robust & rigid
