Raleigh Super Grand Prix
#26
I would like to keep it original if possible, I do like they way they look. I have a bad feeling this is just the start and (don’t tell my wife) I’ll probably end up with one or two more so having a few spare parts is never a bad thing.

If memory serves me , that is different than the one on my ‘78. That crack seems to suggest overtightening of the clamping area , possibly a handlebar swap that was not correct size. There are a bunch of Raleigh and GB stems out there so locating one should not be too difficult. Try eBay or Craigslist.

I have a forged GB stem from a 78 Super Gand Prix. Similar to this one. It is 110mm long however (was 23-24" frame). JFHenry yours for shipping if you want it.

I'm pretty sure the seatpost is turned around 180 degrees compared to "normal standards".
And with the handlebars tilted up the way they are, I think the bike may have been too large for the previous owner.
But whatever gets you to enjoy the ride is best.

Mine also has SunTour bar end shifters with spiral wound steel cables and brake “noodles”. The wheels were Wienman 700c with HF Normandy hubs . I put a set of Mavic rims and LF Campagnolo Record hubs. My daughter rode the bike for a few years and loved it so when she moved away I put it in a shed for safe keeping in case she ever wanted to get back into riding it. I keep thinking I will get it out , tune it up , and ride it every once in a while.

The stem is cracked so the bars move around, no clue how they were set up before I got it.

Uh - oh. So the bike is not rideable. Since it is summertime, this constitutes an emergency.
These look like good options:
Raleigh Stem $36
Raleigh Stem $40

Thanks, working on it.
I do get to ride some. I am part of National Ski Patrol and we bike patrol at a bike park, but it’s not like going for a ride, it’s more like hanging on for dear life trying to get to the accident scene (I was never much of an off road type). My patrol bike is a Trex mountain bike with huge tires and it’s really weird to ride. I’m must be old.

The seat post was 180 degrees off, I was so busy with the stem and tires I didn’t notice.

Got tires, got a stem, lots of cleaning and derailer adjustments.
Ready for some bar tape, not super thrilled with the thick padded modern offerings. Any place to get the old style thin stuff?

Quite a lot of people here have used Neubaum's cotton tape, among many other options. Handlebar tape only lasts a year or two, depending on use, and Neubaum's is relatively cheap so I wouldn't hesitate to replace it.
Another classic era type is more of a plastic/vinyl and shiny look, called Benotto. It has a glossy or flashy look and costs a little more. But, in my opinion, neither is all that comfortable.
I prefer Zipp Service Course, or Lizard Skins tapes, which are very comfortable and easy to use, but are in the $30 - $50 range.
