There's a Hikari on my local FB marketplace for $400 which looks to be in great shape, and it's been sitting there for five months. Unfortunately I have way many projects and zero new bike budget right now.

Ooh… back when you could get half-step-plus-granny triple cranks direct from Shimano. (Even if they were Biopace.) I remember reading this article back then and lusting over the bike.

Point taken about it not being truly half-step. I think once freewheels & cassettes passed 7-speed, half-step wasn’t necessary because the ratios are close enough on the cogs.
My current daily bike is a 9-speed rear, triple crank setup. 24-38-48 chainrings, 12-34 cassette. I find I stay in one chainring - middle for doinking around town, outer when I feel good or have a tailwind, granny when needed.

Nice find! Think that's the bike my FIL once had, down to the color. Did a full maintenance round on it once, as a gift, and when everything was shipshape it made a very nice ride. (He was a plumber and oddly unsuited for working on a wheeled thing made of piping.) They lived in Napa and I believe he probably got it directly from Gordon.
