Brake compatibility

My road bike came with two piece brake pads that use inserts and a set screw.

Can I replace them with M50T?

Yes you can. (I suggest considering replacing your current pads with Kool Stops or something similar. They are easy to remove & replace and bonus, for about the same price as the M50T sets you will end up with better braking.)

You could, but do you really want to? Kool Stop inserts stop better, last longer and don't wear rims as much as Shimano, IME.

Short answer, Yes, but there MAY be an issue.

Road brakes only open so far, so pad thickness is important, especially with wider rims.

If you use these and find the brakes don't open far enough, look for pads sold as ROAD pads.

BTW, save your holders. Inserts are readily available at a savings over complete molded shoes.

Where do you buy inserts?? I see Kool stops are $10 a pair, while Shimano is 10 pairs for $10 and have good reviews on Amazon.

You answered your own question. Good reviews at 1/10th the cost seems like a no brainer to me.

How well did you read the AMazon reviews?
Like this one.

I was in a hurry so didn't look into it more, but I thought, what am I going to do with "10-pair" (as listed) of these brake shoes? Well, don't you worry. It wasn't 10-pair. it was one (1) pair. Now I need to buy another! Insert (steamed) emoji. As far as other qualities, it's too early to say as I just got them (it) last night.

Or this one.

The product description states 10 pairs but I only received one set. I returned the set.

very odd, there are newer reviews that seem fine. I'll give it a shot, but I definitely thought it was too good to be true.

I would buy Kool Stop or SwissStop pads from your local shop. Good stiff shoes with good quality pads with a high end compound is always the way to go. Molded pads are really only something I would use in an emergency and I didn't have shoes already. Replace those inserts with high quality stuff and you will be all set and you can do it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again but after the 8th time you need to replace

That M50 pad doesn't look like it has any angle adjustment. I don't know why you would want those when the insert style allows you to replace your pads without adjusting anything.

Totally agree. No way would I use those on a road bike in preference to adjustable pad holders.

I can see 2 pairs of R55C4s for USD12.49 on amazon US which is a very good deal.

That 10 pairs is BS. Reviews will be fake. I can’t find it anyway.

I hope you saved your original brake pad holders so that you can just buy the new Koolstop pads separately since buying them with new holders about doubles the price.

and wastes metal even if you recycle them.
and means you have to adjust them all over again.

Maybe I don't need new brakes quite yet. The top ones came from 200 mile bike, measuring a little over 10mm thick. The bottom ones from this bike, measuring around 9.5-10mm. Top is Swiss, bottom are no name. Both very close to water grooves and similarly pliable.
