I hear that. Had a friend in the 200+ range that stood to climb and his crank arm broke off at the pedal. He went down hitting the bar injuring the ‘boys’ (ouch) with other abrasions. Took a bit for him to recover. Don’t think he ever stood again after that, and least on a bike.

I can hit the mid 500 Watts for short durations which helps with steep punchy climbs. If I recall 630 was my max but run out of air quickly. My usual is about 160 to 200. Definitely not racer material - past or present.

My plan is to ride this bike which I just built up, a lot going forward as I start hitting some trails for casual gravel riding. At this point of the year I start getting weary of my usual road rides so really hoping to spark new interest in off road biking. I also want to start being a little more upright in the saddle to pus less stress on my back and shoulders. I figure at some point, riding on drops will be too uncomfortable.

The latest to make it into the house is this 1984 Raleigh Racing USA Prestige. Pretty much the top model with nice Suntour Superbe parts and hubs.

How I picked it up.


Good bones but a bit of a mess.

Full service later with some new bits and it's now ready to ride like this. The Mavics look good on this but I'm having the rear wheel relaced and will probably stick with them since they are the original Superbe hubs/Araya red label rims.

I put thousands of miles on one of these great bikes from 1973 to 1978. I had a gas pipe Huffy when a home from college friend gave me his old Peugeot UO8 when he bought a Motobecan Pro. I had died trying and failing to keep up with him. His generosity led to me buying the PX10 6 months later. It was the foundation of my bike love and I'm still riding now at a touch south of 70 years old. This brings back many memories!

At 66 I've purchased my 1st carbon bike. An '06 Felt F4C in great shape that's been really taken care of. Previously I've been a staunch collector of steel frame bikes from the 70's & 80's including holding on to my 1st bike store bike - an '82 Fuji Supreme. I'm lucky to live in a great cycling area with year-round cycling, good country roads, and friendly local clubs.

Keeping up with the club guys on their carbon bikes and me on heavier steel frame bikes has become more difficult as I've started having a little hip & knee arthritis issues, so I started looking to a lighter brifter shifting bike. I love the old bikes BUT brifter shifting is so much easier. My 1st was Trek's entry level aluminum road bike, Their Alpha 1.1


That helped and I've ridden it for many years, but I as I've gotten older I've been keeping an eye out a good deal on something carbon and lighter and with better gearing than Sora. I'm really liking This Felt bike with Ultegra gearing. It's a little more "billboard" than I'd like with the Vuelta Corsa Team V wheels, but I'm seeing a real performance gain in my riding:

I don't think any of the parts are factory, I cobbled it together from parts on hand (except the Tiagra levers & derailleurs). It's my rain and indoor trainer bike.

Just prior to my shift to folding bikes, I built this fixie w/ brakes. Got a knee replacement a couple of years ago & I put her in a trainer for my PT recovery. Frame is a triathlon demo that I built up w/ Campy, Deda & Profile Design parts & a pr of vintage Zipp carbon rims.

in the early 90’s at one of the Thrift Drug Classic pro road races (in Pittsburgh) - the Motorola team used 12-28t cassettes (I counted the teeth on the big sprocket lol)

it’s possible (likely?) other teams were also using 28t cassette - but I did not check them

(the Motorola team Merckx bikes were actually Litespeed titanium bikes)

the first year of that race a large number of riders / teams dropped out - less than half of the field finished

I actually live in Kennewick now but I ride the Riverfront Trail, Amon Park, and Columbia Park frequently. I commute to work on the east side of Pasco often and ride the Riverfront Trail home to the west end, Badger Canyon area of Kennewick. We probably have crossed paths. Depending on my mood, I could be riding a Lynskey Ti, SWorks Roubaix, or SWorks Tarmac SL6. I'll try and dig up a selfie. 😁

My main ride is a BMC Roadmachine (2022 model) with Ultegra 12spd Di2. 51cm. Great bike.. but not as Endurance oriented a frame as I hoped. I wish it had rim brakes too. Not liking disc brakes. I’m a south Louisiana rider .. no need for disc brakes here Age- 61 and 10 months.

Hey, I have the same bike and I am also 61! Great minds think alike. You can see mine back up in post 3439. I bought it a little over a year ago and I'm really liking it. I love disc brakes but I do live in a hilly region.

how do you like the Scribes? I saw a YouTube review of the wheelset (the owner had a red Roadmachine). He really liked the wheels. Ive read both other reviews where some had issues with Scribe.

I may sell the BMC soon. Not crazy about the geometry.. would prefer more upright.. the Roadmachine seems just barely slacker than my CAAD9

How stable are such bicycles, laterally?
They would be easier to pack for bringing on extended camping trips.

Folding bikes, at least for me, put you lower to the ground & in a more upright position so, you’re much more stable & comfortable than a road bike. My transition to folding bikes is spurred on by the development of our rail system here in Honolulu & future travel to the mainland, Europe & ?
