Poll. Wich headset do you like more?

Type A:
Round with a little groove in the middle.
https://i.ibb.co/RHzVVdT/Whats-App-I...t-22-46-28.jpg

Type B:
Diamond shape with a tiny step on the bearing side.
https://i.ibb.co/0JtXfGM/Whats-App-I...22-46-28-1.jpg

Has anyone any information regarding them? or the hypothetical year?

Kinda subjective.

what frame would this go on?

while I see the first, I think Italian, campy, Omas, etc…

I don’t know the diamond ones or their country of origin.

what year and from where is the frame you are building up?

lastly, check Velobase.com they have a quick view feature that might let you figure out more from the second pic.

In general I like the top one more. I have no qualms about using either one if they are of condition. In this case I think the second has a lower stack.

Working on bikes for 35 years, never knew there was a difference. I recall wasting money once on a Chris King 1” threaded for a road bike and discovered it needed special tool for install and that the basic Ultegra 1” was every bit as good. Spent my money on those afterwards. A headset is a headset is a headset, it’s not something you need to spend a lot of money on, especially modern Aheadset. The older threaded with loose ball bearings used to go bad, I’ve never had a headset fail in maybe 20 or more years.

Either could be fine but Campy is always the correct answer for me, they make the same statement they always have, the best and most aesthetically pleasing by far IMO.

Case in point,

The second link is to a rear dropout, on my computer, so I like the top one better.

While Merziac is right, Campy does make pretty things, I’m equally impressed with their quality and the choices of their subcontracted parts.

the bearings are made by F.A.G. In Germany, a bearing company with the highest quality levels.

they sought out the best, aerospace quality, just for a low temp bicycle headset.

Thats why I usually chose Campagnolo.

*note, I put the periods between the letters so it shows up. That is really their name.

Magistroni had a similar one, as well:

For me, I’d go with the one with wider flats for the wrench as I know I’d slip while tightening the headset. But for you, as your bikes that you’ve shown have a certain style, you should go with the second headset. It will be different and interesting. Plus you are no doubt a better with tools than I, so damage should not be a concern.

I would consider buying a Tange Flacon headset for a lot less money about the best vintage style headset you can get and easily found for under $50.

Problem with the Assuato one is that you need a very big wrench. Your head set wrench or your typical adjustable spanner is not going to be wide enough.

For a bearing set that never movers more than 17*, it really doesn't matter to me. They all work fine if adjusted correctly. JMHO, MH

Right you are. That is a good enough reason I maybe should change my vote. I was thinking the Assauto was a bit cool and iconoclastic, but needing a crazy wrench to adjust it could be a problem. Although I guess these days people are less and less likely to have headset wrenches anyway, so maybe it doesn't matter outside of loaded touring.

Either is OK if it came with the frame and works. I used to be a big fan of the big Record era CampI headsets but in the last few years on anything I built that needed a HS got the Ritchey Logic. I think it is a good headset for the price
