Fun perusing through what remains in this thread. This thread is so old that I can't remember if I've posted here yet.

So just in case, here's a few:
1985 Schwinn High Sierra - Was original and rode like a dream but found a crack in the rear hub flange, and wasn't sure what to do. Turns out it fit my neighbor very well so I swapped out some of the parts I wanted and gave it to him. Great to see him out riding it from time to time.





1991 Diamond Back Apex
Could almost eat off of this one - very clean and original except for the saddle. But so small, so... need to sell it I guess.


'87 KHS Team, XC9000
Also too small, and sold it after putting it back together. I'd buy one again in a heartbeat if I saw one in my size.



The one that chucked me down the rabbit hole: '83 MountainBikes Mt Tam
Driving to and past a few local garage sales one day looking to see if anyone was selling a bench vise, and saw this one. After hearing this particular bike's local history, I couldn't leave it there. This is what it looked like when I brought it home, and it mostly looks the same since it's mostly been sitting waiting for me to tend to it. Maybe I'll tidy it up tomorrow...

I shudder to think what that Mt Tam is worth. Definitely a check-box ticker - a grail-bike marque, bull moose, OG metal thumbies, Deer-head / stag-head. If you're in the midwest, it could easily be Classic Bikes Auburn material.

It is probably a Hite-Rite mount. The OG dropper.

Breeze's Hite-Rite! That's a helluva bike. AE didn't do a lot of ATBs as far as I know, but boy when he did...

Man, look at those steep seat and head tube angles!

It would be interesting to see an evolutionary line of MTBs from 1980 to 2020 to see how things have changed. Like the “parade of early humans.”

They are 2.1’s

I haven’t measured the clearance but there is plenty of it. The 2.1s are a popular size tire. Check out the site bikerebuilds.com for other inspiration.

That would be interesting. In 1986, I bought a Shogun Prairie Breaker PRO (it's in this thread way back). The major unique selling point was the steep seat tube angle and the short (41 inch) wheelbase.

The review in Mountain Biking magazine said this geometry made the bike responsive and quick on technical terrain, without making it twitchy on flats. That's true.

When my buddies and I would trade bikes for a ride, I was surprised at the long wheelbases on the Stumpjumpers and Rockhoppers and Hoo Koo E Koos... very hands-off riding stable on flats. My Shogun... not so much. I rarely rode hands-off even on paved rail-trails.


PS: I still have that bike and I still love to ride it!

Nishiki Bel Air

Just finished building up this '85 Nishiki Bel Air yesterday that I picked up back in December. Bought the frame on a whim because I liked the top and seat tube measurements along with a donor bike for pretty cheap. Thanks to SpeedofLite for pulling up an old article on the Bel Air from their Bicycling magazine archive and sharing it with me. It's the only source of info on this frame I found and set me on the path to find a 3 pulley mech for the build. Thanks to madpogue for parting with the LePree for this build and The Thin Man for the practically new Sansin/Araya wheelset. They were worth cold setting the rear drops to 130mm for. I've still got a number of ideas for this build but happy to have it rolling in time for the monthly 26" Ain't Dead ride on Friday.



Out on a shakedown ride that turned into about 20 mi.

Kona Kula 1994

Got this 1994 Kona Kula (Kona's first aluminum MTB) with almost all original parts but beaten up for a great price. I had initially planned to restore it to its full original '90s appearance, but I needed a ride. So, I threw on this saddle, seatpost clamp, pedals, and wheelset. I'll gradually work on the full restoration over time...lets see.

The original highlights include a titanium handlebar, Shimano Deore XT components, and a Marzocchi XC 500 suspension fork.


A nice XC ride but these handlebars were short!
