Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is my biggest concern with e-bikes, the fact that you don't "earn" the speed you can travel at. If you're riding a regular bike, you've had to put in a lot of work and miles to be able to ride at the sort of speeds ebikes can propel you at, or to be able to do the climbs that you need to do to be able to do a fast descent. You gain at least SOME bikehandling skills. And on group rides, you need miles and miles of riding just to not get dropped by even a fairly moderate ride.

But even if you just BUY speed, you can't buy bikehandling skills.

I don't seem to encounter them much in my avenues of cycling - solo training, racing and A pace rides. And I'm all for them from a utilitarian perspective, especially for commuting. But, they seem to be a hot topic for most middling club riders, which is understandable IMO.
Until today I was unaware that bike riding clubs have boards of directors.

I imagine once you reach a certain size, and start holding events, you want to incorporate or something to avoid individual liability if someone joins your ride and gets injured in a crash. Alto Velo, mentioned above, requires riders joining their group rides to have a signed waiver on file.

EDIT: By contrast, the famous/notorious Spectrum Ride has no organizer. It just meets where it always met, starts at the time it always started, rides where it always rode.

Depends on the size of the club. SDBC has nearly 1,000 members and a lot of membership and sponsorship dollars to allocate / spend wisely. All in the name of growing bicycling and bike racing in San Diego. I'm involved as the Men's 1/2/3 team race director, and together with the 4/5/Master's director, we have 10 - 15 grand to spend on the racing teams as we see fit. Budget varies a bit year to year.

So it's quite a bit more than a group of buddies that likes to refer to themselves as a club. SDBC has been around for over 75 years as well.

I can see the liability thing. When I rode with my bil and his group (the group that convinced me I am not a group rider), I had to sign a waiver.

My club has a board. I got drafted during Covid to be the “Ride Director” because of my medical background. It’s a crappy position and I was very happy to resign my post after 2 years.

My favourite cycling-by-a-stadium occurrence was rolling through the Glass House (Veterans Memorial Arena) parking lot the night before a monster truck show. That's when I learned they put skinny tractor tyre/wheel assemblies on monster trucks for transport in conventional semi trailers. It was pretty rad watching Gravedigger back out of a trailer.

Cut through the same parking lot when the circus was in town. Also pretty interesting.

I don't recall signing a waiver to ride with Pen Velo, though when I actually joined the club it was probably part of it, and they don't mention waivers on their site. OTOH, Alto Velo requires a signed waiver on file to ride with them, member or not.

IIRC, Larry was complaining about being asked about a waiver when he tried to join an Alto Velo ride. So he showed them by shadowing the ride without actually joining.

Ooh, there are two bands on the calendar with cycling-oriented names. Too bad 99.625% of bands with cycling-oriented names absolutely suck.

Bonus points to the flyer designer for the vintage Macintosh font usage tho.

Ive noticed over many season that many of our group crashes occur late summer, early fall. My theory is that by then, strength has exceeded bike handling skills.

Guess I better start checking out spring training seats. Royals tickets were still fairly reasonable last year, pretty much all others were more expensive than weekday regular season D-back tix.
