We started out under cool and grey skies, up the steep pavement of Chaney Trail and the lower part of the Mt. Lowe Rd. Once on dirt, the grade eases up, but are some sections that are loose and chunky, requiring that you keep on the power to maintain progress. Shortly before reaching Inspiration Point, we got above the cloud layer, and enjoyed the sunshine and blue skies.
Nice ride! I've been wanting to do this route, but all my cycling buddies are weak sauce climbers, so I might have to do it solo. Is 2x 30:36t gravel low gearing adequate to climb it? It seems a bit more relaxing not having to deal with traffic if taking the road route up to Mt. Wilson!

Your gearing will be fine. My low is 38x42. My friend's low is 34x36 (he's pretty strong). The steepest part of the climb is in the first few miles, but it's paved. After that, it's not a battle of the grade, but of the surface. I've done the Lowe Rd to Inspiration Point and back on 36mm tires, but having now done it on 48s, I highly recommend going with the widest you have. Bring lots of water and fuel.

On Sunday I did 27 miles and 2000 feet of climbing. My legs felt good and I was flying up the climbs. Though on one hill climb, another cyclist saw me coming fast and upped his pace. I caught up to his wheel when we got to the top, but couldn't pass him. I guess he didn't want to get dropped!

On Monday I did 21 miles and 2100 feet of climbing doing hill repeats at Griffith. Mondays are the best there, because there's hardly any traffic. It's getting to the point I rarely take breaks other than to enjoy the view from after climbing. I'm trying to increase my tolerance for climbing longer distances!

Wednesday took it easy on the gravel bike and did 18 miles and 2100 feet of climbing. Days are definitely getting warmer!
