I forgot I was a utility bicyclist that moment, and fell when getting off

Most of the time I ride without any load. Yesterday I had two shoe boxes piled on my rear rack. When I was getting off after crossing a street, I forgot the load behind me and swang my right leg over my seat as usual, but the shoe boxes were taller than the seat, so my foot hit the boxes and I and the bike fell on the side of the street. Thankfully the cars were all stopped at the red light and several kind pedestrians immediately came to my help. Only got scraped knees. Just to share my lesson. I will get some knee pads for future riding.

This is a common issue (at least for me, and my wife who just had a hip replacement) on loaded touring bikes.

It is annoying enough that I have taken to loading most stuff on the front (panniers on low riders).

Is it possible to do something similar?

Another option is a trailer, but that has its own set of issues.

I do this alot on my bikes lol.I sometimes use a trailer and when its empty i hit a big bump with one wheel and it flips over lol. The longtail cargo bike has solved most my issues of messing cargo up. for now anyway
