I had a couple "Beat the Rain" rides this week and today's ride has been forecast the same way. Those are the best because the roads are dry as opposed to morning rains that leave the roads covered in debris and worms. Ick.

Are you ever concerned for fire while out there in the depths of dry country? It occurred to me this morning that I am out in tinder dry country, that is prone to fire this time of year. I do ride through recently burned areas. That insight might put me back on a road bike until the rains return.

First crash on the mtb this morning. The route I was looking for, from eight years ago is now closed and full of cattle. Trying to find another way around I found myself on single track and in somewhat deep woods. A dry stick reached out and grabbed my arm and threw me off the bike. Into tinder dry leaves.

We did not quite beat the rain. The first half of the ride was cloudy but dry. The second half had light and intermittent sprinkles, we never got soaked but the roads were wet which slowed down those of us (like me) who are extra cautious on fast descents in the wet. We took a shortcut and all survived.

I did not check per se, but the beta blockers reduce HR and are going to reduce maximum exercise capacity and thus inhibit performance on the bike, and the others are sedatives in some way and should not improve your cycling in any rational way. I know my drugs pretty well.

On today’s ride one of the guys broke his saddle (not sure of brand but the center is almost entirely missing and the two halves are joined at the nose and at the back), at the back. I told him he would have to ride “on the rivet” the rest of the ride. He had no idea what this meant, so I did my best to explain. I’ve had Xtandi added to my regimen and I seem to be tolerating it very well. Of course, it’s only been 15 days but I don’t seem to be plagued by any of the myriad of side effects that I had to go to class and learn about. The worst is that the doc took me off Nexium (interaction) and put me on Pepcid AC and it isn’t doing the job very well.
Other than the GERD control, I’m pretty happy.

The rim strips arrived today, and I got them installed, and swapped in the tires from the Performance Titan (Neuvation) wheels I'd been running. With the wider rims, the tires are fatter! So, now I DESPERATELY want to ride them, get them all de-stressed and re-trued and all, and it's RAINING!!! Not just wet, but a steady rain. 
I also leaned an important lesson - Leave old alloy spoke nipples alone! While I wait for the new rear brake caliper, I checked the tension on the spokes on the CIrcuit. Way low! So, I thought, "I'll just tighten them up". I lubed each spoke/nipple interface, and got to tightening. At least 4 of the nipples were rounded out. I'm thinking either leave it alone - I was able to increase the tension a bit and then retrue - or maybe I should go nuts and just replace ALL the nipples with new brass ones. That's pretty cheap - like $12 for both wheels - but laborious. Still, now that I spent the money for the TM-1 and the nipple driver, maybe I should. It'll make the wheels stronger and they'll last longer!

I've been AWOL recently due to traveling in England and some medical changes that have gone very well. I got a new drug and either the pharmacist or my doctor's nurse has called me every other day to make sure it's going well (which it is). It was weird getting calls in England especially when the first question was. "So, where are we at today?"
