Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Unfortunately, due to trees and the hill, I can't get a decent look toward the northern horizon unless I go about 0.4 miles from the house, and I'm not sure when the best time to do so might be.

Best chances around here are supposed to be 11-2. But I'm gonna be ready for bed well before then.

I've seen northern lights a couple times in Portland. Of course it was cloudy both time, but green clouds are still pretty cool, and enough to freak you out if you weren't ready for 'em

Once a year my club schedules a remote ride starting about 50 miles from here. I first did it in the 80s and it became one of my favorite rides. It's 85 mile with 7500 feet of climbing but it's harder than it sounds. There is a community early (where I lived for 4 years) but nothing after that until the 40 mile mark, then nothing until the end.
Lots of climbing and usually wind for the last part.

6 people are saying they're doing it. Only one of them is around my speed and most of the others are competitive. So I would be off the back. And I haven't done it for several years. I did it solo when I lived up there, did it supported by the L.A. Wheelmen a few times. A few times supported by our club, and as part of an organized ride with hundreds of riders. And several times with small groups unsupported.

And I'm gonna wuss out. I'll stay local. Wish I was going.
I have some old pics. My avatar is at the top of a 23 mile descent.

In the flatter section before going back up.

The area where I lived.

A climb that has a long approach and keeps getting steeper. After you finally get to the top you descend for about a minute or 2 then start climbing again. Easy for Terry, hard for me.

Some of the clubbies on a warm day. The guy center in the back is BF member Thompson. I did a bunch of rides with him back then. Nice man and very strong rider.

I guess they've got a 360 degree cam up on Mars hill. I'll peep on that a few times before bed and call that Aurora-watching

Perhaps if you had done 2,000 squats things would have turned out differently.

Yesterday the forecast high for next Sunday was 99. With a generally cooler week. Today it’s 103 with a generally similar week to what we just had

As we have moved into hotter weather than any of us has ever seen, going on three weeks now, I have moved my bedtime up to 7:30, instead of 8. I continue to arise anywhere between 02:30 and 03:30. I usually have my second cup of coffee at around 08:30, and then nap around 1.
Actually, the nap itself is very short, but the downtime occupies the entire afternoon. Among the gringos in the city, it’s called getting flat.

Seeing something only with longer exposure seems like cheating. I thought there might have been a slightly greenish hue to the east, but otherwise didn't see anything unusual to even focus on with the phone. Saw a few stars.

There were more cars out at 00:30 that I thought there would be. They probably were wondering what I was doing out walking in the middle of the night.
