Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tesla's also no longer the only EV game in town, and the competition are not sleeping. I just saw reviews for Hyundai's Ioniq5 N - it mimics a car with an 8-speed automatic, both with noise and "shifting", and although it's completely artificial, it's apparently highly engaging for driving enthusiasts.

Talk to me when those things have a "Ludicrous+" mode.

I don't know - 8 shiftable and completely convincing "gears", complete with shifting behavior, and rev-limiter-hitting behavior seems pretty damn ludicrous to me. The two reviews I saw BOTH said, in essence, "I know this is completely fake, but it's highly effective."

Apart from normalizing EVs, I think Tesla's greatest contribution is the Supercharger network that just works. Other carmakers are too cautious about spending so much cash on that, and as a result many people who want EVs don't get them, or go with Teslas, rather than buying someone else's and being the mercy of the other, apparently unreliable charger networks.

Agreed. The saying over the last year or so, "Love the car, hate the man" is true in my house, also, but my wife who swore she'd never own one bought one all by her self after spending a few hours driving one around. Elon is the latest corporate villain like Chick Fil'A, Hobby Lobby, Trek and Armstrong, Specialized and strong-arming dealers, Busch beer or Budweiser (can't remember which). Lest we forget Henry Ford and his political leanings. Ford seems to have done alright.

We all have to have someone to hate and pour our negative energies in to. Might as well be Tesla.

My buddy had one of the "sport" model Ford Focus, I think it was. Cute car and it electronically made sound so that it sounded like a bad-ass.

Yeah, it seems like "piped-in" sound is all the rage these days. I guess it's preferable to a really loud exhaust system, at least for bystanders.

I remember when I got the Challenger I toyed with the idea of getting an aftermarket cat-back system, but then I read that mostly the driver can't hear much difference unless it's REALLY loud outside the car. It makes sense, since the noise is being pointed out the back, away from you. Well, there was that, and then there was the likelihood of grievous bodily harm from Mrs. GJ for spending >$800 for more noise.

It appears my streak of heroic actions will end at 1 day unless something happens in the next 6 hours.

A customer brought in a titanium muffler for us to install on his C7. The part cost $3500. I think we charged him a couple hundred to put it on the car.

Drove Mrs. rjones28's Mini to Cooperstown in Sport Mode this weekend. Enhanced throttle response, tighter steering/suspension, and rev-matching on the downshifts. No synthetic engine sounds.

The rev-matching feature is controversial among manual transmission enthusiasts, but I like it.

I've been cogitating on when and what with to replace the now-10-years-old Dodge. But, you know, apart from the water pump last month, this car just runs and runs. 106K on the odometer now, and it has its share of little dings (plus a small paint scrape because I'm a goddam moron). Besides, Mrs. GJ's Sienna turns 23 years old this month, so maybe there's no particular rush.

Same thing as the Hyundai with fake shifting and "noise". You know what you're buying, why does one pretend to make it what it isn't?

Spent the afternoon immersive waxing chains. One was a new chain and one was a repeat immersion. I’m a fan. Maybe I should start a thread.
