What is it?

I've been unsuccessful finding the origins on my bike. I purchased my bike used from the original owner in 2004 or 2005. He was a racer and said it was built for him as a team bike out of Chicago probably within 2-3 yrs prior to my purchase. There are 2 identifiers on the bottom bracket 3485U053 and Ti6429V, both look to be hand etched. It had full Dura Ace components, 3T stem and bar, carbon fork, Thompson seat post and Fizik seat. I had to replace the original wheel set over 10 yrs ago and don't remember info on the originals. It has orange and blue gulf livery and the brand decals are in large print font. There is also a (race number?) tab on the underside of the top tube.

I would expect it to be a 2001 or 2002 but catalogs don't show this livery on any LeMond bike. I'd appreciate any info anyone may have about it.

(My status doesn't allow pictures yet).

It’s an unpainted Ti frame. (+1!)

My Ti Lemond "Victoire" (blue panel decal on naked Ti) from 2002 has serial numbers quite similar to yours: Ti0956T and 3486U071. But those numbers are very distinctly not hand etched. They look almost like an old dot-matrix printer font and are machine-engraved into the bottom bracket.

Sounds like yours is indeed a team race frame, near 2002.

finally able to post a pix.

The original owner said he thought he got it through Higher Gear, a shop and team out of Chicago. He said the frame wasn’t built for him but it was built up custom. The shop shows as closed permanently.

Interesting. The main decals are more like the 1998-2002 style but without the world stripe colors. Yet the fork decal is a later style you don't see on the production bikes until around 2004. The two styles appear to be a mismatch. The race tab is interesting too. They certainly were able to do custom work back in the day as evidenced by my GP&GS Lemond. Note on the pic from mine how they world championstripes are actually upside down.

Oh, and I since I have acquired some of the actual old Lemond catalogs I've realized that at least some of the scanned copies at Trek, Fisher, Klein, Lemond bike catalogs, bicycle brochures are missing pages.

Maiden voyage of winter project #2! Didn't see any fluffy cows, but there is a lot of summer to go. The Microshift Centos drivetrain was a little stiff at first but still shifted perfectly; hoping more use time will get it to a sweet spot. Only downside to the ride was that the saddle slid backward and I am not sure if I didn't torque it correctly or if it is a compatibility issue between the SMP and the seatpost; time will tell.
