Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

maan, nice photos. there's a reason why this area is included in the death ride. always enjoy seeing your pics and ride write-ups (in the other thread).

Thanks, I feel lucky to live where I do and I enjoy sharing it. Sonora pass is actually not one of the Death Ride climbs, it's one highway down from those climbs...IMO, it's harder than those passes. The east side of Monitor pass is similar in length and average gradient to Sonora West, but Monitor is a steady gradient and is almost easy with climbing gears. Sonora on the other hand, has extended length sections of double digit grades that are about as much fun as getting kicked between the legs.

Last time I did this ride, I ended up cracking badly on the last mile of climbing(finishes with an 11% grade.) This time saved a little in the tank, for some personal redemption, and tried to "attack" the final mile...or at least the best I can do with 7000' of gain in the legs and an effort at over 9k'.
