Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The first car I bought wasn't a Cadillac or a Galaxie either.

my first car was a 56 VW Beetle. I should have kept that car. It would actually be worth something now. My second car was a Triumph Herald.

I had an uncle who bought a new beetle, in the sixties, and put it away in storage. Sadly, he died young, of brain cancer, as did two of his brothers. All of them within a few years of each other. Ages between 31 and 50 something. A mysterious phenomenon. Three survived, though one of them committed suicide later, after a doctor visit.

Mrs. rjones28 had the Sport Six/Vitesse version of the Herald, BITD.

Was up late last might. Date night and all. I just got in from number 11. A different, somewhat more civilized route. 100 years ago it was heavily civilized but in decline. Now it’s in ruins but not all grown up like the other ruined area I ride through. Hereabouts we have Maya ruins— the area is paved with them, and historical ruins. Cattle, followed by henequen(green gold), after the soil would no longer support cattle. With the coming of oil-based fiber, the end came very quickly

What a magnificent structure. Hope the funds can be raised to relocate it.

We have been so busy lately it’s insane. We had a ton of nonsense with putting the pool in and have been busting our hump pretty much every night with some landscaping task or another. Not much time to ride bikes. Did a 77 mile “race” yesterday that had 7300 feet of climbing, it was brutal. I averaged close to 16, which is okay given my general lack of fitness and dealing with dirt roads.

Now that things are slowing down, hopefully can get some miles in. Getting 25 yards of topsoil in on Thursday, will spend the weekend spreading it then seeding it.

Worked in the garden. I have a nice raspberry patch as well as sunchokes popping up. I am a lazy gardener and believe these crops will just grow and spread on their own.

Lawn mowing content:

Our neighbor (who we are friendly with but not really close friends) has a really loud lawn tractor and he typically mows his lawn on Sunday late afternoon/evening (he is doing it now). Next Sunday we are having a little get-together at our place as my cycling friend from the SF area is visiting, and we invited several cycling friends who know him to come and socialize.

We have a fine deck and ideally would have the get-together on the deck, but if neighbor is mowing his lawn it will be unpleasant and tough to chat over the noise.

So of course, the question is do we ask him ahead of time to not mow his lawn from 530-730 next Sunday, hold off and only ask if we hear him fire up the mower, or bite our collective tongue and hope that with the 3 day holiday weekend he might mow his lawn on Memorial Day?

None of there is especially appealing tbh.

This may have been the first ride since I got COVID last month that felt normal! I checked my HRV before heading out, and my HR was 47 and HRV (from HRV4Training) was 8.6, which is the best number I've seen all week! So, while I didn't go nuts, I also didn't hold back too much on this ride. I'm tired after the ride - 58 miles - but not fatigued like I have been. 58 feels like 58, whereas before it would feel more like 70.

I made the mistake of dressing for the first 5 miles (thin long sleeve jersey with long sleeve base layer) as soon as I got to Canada Rd, it felt like too much. Next time, arm warmers and a vest, because I can peel them off. The other mistake I made was depending on my knowledge of where the water taps are. I've been taking one bottle, and just depending on refilling it along the way, but today there was a roadblock that kept me from getting to one public water tap, and the other one was Out Of Order. You'd think the one at the Water Temple, run by the San Francisco Water Department, would work, but no. At least it wasn't hot, so I wasn't dehydrated.

The people buying our house are French showers and we close the deal on June 3rd. Despite their character deficiencies I want to leave them with a house that has a nicely maintained yard and lawn(s). I worked for an hour and a half today on the dreaded hill. It looks nice. I feel crappy. My old man taught me the right way and I have to honor that.

Likely they will. And they will eventually have to be contained. Be lazy at your peril. I just ordered $50 worth of garden seed. Crops I used to grow up north, but grown out in Mexico, so they are already day length adapted. I did a small trial that’s just about done, just to see, and it was a great success. This will of course be all raised beds with brought in soil. We’re currently looking for a dump truck load. Seven cubic meters. We have other uses for it as well.

tell him the situation and offer to cut it for him earlier in the day or whenever the weather allows. He'll probably just tell you he'll do it another time.

Didn’t get to ride this morning. Flight was delayed going home, so didn’t get home til about 1:30 am. I set my alarm for 4 am like usual but was so exhausted I never woke up.

I am hoping tomorrow to do a metric. Really just depends on what time I wake up, have to be back by 730 am- 745 am.

Training is kind of on hold while i’m in work training. The trainer and I are not getting a lot, and I have been so stressed out with bus school I can’t really focus on anything else.
