That bike deserves nothing less than to be overnight shipped directly to Curno so that master Pelizzoli can have his steadied hand at the bottom bracket and make things right.
A hose clamp could suffice in the meantime.
I feel so torn right now, because I'm gutted that someone else is going through this pain, yet completely satisfied that I now have someone to share my exact pain with. I'm pretty sure I'm just a demented individual.
In any case, it will probably be just fine as-is. I think those black inset-style BB adapter are just a large fit for the Huffys. And since these Huffys are basically fillet-brazed, just like all the best of the best of the custom American master framebuilder's works of art, just take up a torch and give that bad boy some braze, and while your at it, braze a few other things on the frame. Why not? I mean, not now, cause it will be fine. But if you look at it and it annoys you, then just fix it. You definitely won't hurt anything. However...

For all the lambasting these crap Huffys get, I still could not find a single picture of one of these same style of frames breaking, or even those cheapo stamped dropouts breaking.
Yet, the Campagnolo Nuovo Record cranks on my Huffy started breaking. There is poetic justice in that.

If you followed the Huffente thread, you'll know that AMCO's solution when this happened to him was to take it all apart and braze the seam back together. That's the Huffente solution. I've decided that the rat rod solution is to shrug and say, "I've seen worse." I have confidence that like the rust, this particular problem will not cause a catastrophic failure within the lifetime of this bike.

You know, I think I like the hose clamp idea. It provides a perfectly functional safeguard against further failure, however unlikely that may be. And best of all, it's cheap and easy.

I think this is definitely true. It's not just a matter of cleaning up the surfaces or making sure it's going in straight. I think hitting the chainstay protrusion wasn't the issue. The adapter is just a bit to big.

Joking aside, I imagine the tolerance for high dollar BMX bikes was more exacting. Which I think is what these adapters were meant for? Or the Schwinns I guess?

I've made a little progress. I was going to wait until I had something more substantial to show, but I'll give you a preview.
The 25.4 mm downtube (in the non-aero section, of course) required a bit of padding.
The cockpit is coming together nicely.
The front dropout size was narrower than standard, but it's nothing a few seconds with a Dremel tool won't fix.
