Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? speaking of lame decals: 2006 Pista.

Okay, so nobody was actually talking about lame decals. But I ask: how lame is it to put a decal under the clearcoat, large, bright, with a big exclamation point-- right on the top tube by the stem-- reading "NO BRAKES"?!

That's how it is on the 2006 "gang green" Pistas. I *suppose* a small percentage of new owners might be dumb and hurt themselves when they, um, forget that they're not running brakes. But how often does that happen, really?

And if you install a front brake (the fork is drilled for one, after all) or (gasp) get used to brakeless riding?-- I guess the decal no longer applies. Good thing they put it under the clearcoat!

Of course, millions of bikes are sold with "Warning! Use a Helmet!" stickers to avoid potential lawsuits. But you can scrape those off. Is there another $500 bike that doesn't let you scrape off the newb stickers? I don't see 'em under the clearcoat on Bianchi's midrange mountain bikes, for example.

Did the fixed fad-- selling loads of track-specific bikes to wreckless youngsters-- prompt the offending decal? Wouldn't it be better to throw a front brake on from the factory? Tracksters could easily remove it, of course. I'm sure they're not wild about the decal either.

I think the decal is less a warning and more for the "cool" factor.

Still sucks.

Funny how the component spec includes a front brake / aero lever.

I volunteer fixing up kids bikes, and one of the bikes we have in our storage is a tiny pink bike with a chainguard. On the chainguard it says "NO BRAKES". Smallest fixed gear I've ever seen.

i picked up a radioflyer kids bike from our local goodwill that said no brakes on one of the seat stays..it was the tiniest fixed gear i've ever seen, i managed to pull a few trackstands on that bike too, i just need to find those pictures.

edit: i didn't scroll down enough..exactly like the one above...i broke all but 3 spokes in the rear wheel playing with that thing.

I tried trackstanding on the pink one (I forgot what brand it was) and couldn't hold it very long. I'll have to try again sometime.

I'm not uncool with that. And no that is not a double negative. I'm not uncool with no brakes. Although it sounds like it would be, that is not the same as I am cool with brakes, although that is true as well. What was your point again? Oh, the sword in your brain over words printed on bikes and tires.

if you dont see a front brake on the pista 06 at your LBS. Its because they didint put one on for display. They will probably give you one if you buy the bike. Because it may be "user installed".
