Does anybody know where to find the stitched on leather handlebar wrap popular in the '80's? I believe Brooks (of Brooks saddle fame) and Rhode Gear (Handlebar Hide) used to produce this type of product. Web searches have been unsuccessful so far. I am in the process of restoring a 1982 Miyata Team bike that originally came equipped with black Fujita leather handlebar wrap.

Steering wheel wrap may be my only option, although steering wheel wrap is quite thin when compared to wrap designed for handlebars. I have a feeling someone knows of a source even if its an unused package of leather wrap that has been laying around for the past twenty years.

Jeff, thanks for the links. I am looking for the stiched on type of wrap, but that calfskin leather tape sounds like it might be a viable alternative.

Some years ago I read in a Rivendell Reader about using leather golf club wrap for bars. Could come in long enough lengths and is readily available.

Actually they are getting harder to find. Especially in the unwrapped rolls. Most of the leather grips you find now are pre-wrapped. Winn used to be the most popular, but it appears that they no longer produce the old-style leather grips.

These folks still make them: https://www.thegripmasterusa.com/tgm/home1

hello,

the only source I know thats easily available is tennis raquet leather grip wrap.

most good pro shops should have black and brown (wilson brand I think) . I was pondering using brown as it would looks nice with my brooks saddle but there are 2 issues.

1) I believe 3 rolls would be needed to do an average set of drop bars 1.5 per side. one wrap is not quite long enough to do a side (I think its a tad short??) its $11-$12 PER PACK (1 GRIP) = pricey bar tape

2) although these tennis raquet leather grip wraps will handle perspiration I dont know how they would hold up with rain ,snow ...

but if your only concerned about the looks the stuff is on the shlf at many better tennis shops.

Good Luck.

Do you plan to never be caught in the rain, with that leather wrap?I would look for some cotton cloth tape instead and shellac it after you wrap the bars Rivendell may have it.

You might be able to compromise and shellac some leather tennis tape...

James, I don't know about you, but most of us wear shoes constructed of leather, which are frequently subjected to moisture and are none the worse for wear, when properly treated. I own two H.D motor sickles (draped in enough leather to make me a top ten target with the PETA crowd) that have handled all Mother Nature can lay down with no problems to date. The Team Miyata I am restoring (or attempting to return to original condition) came with the Fujita leather wraps and they were throughly soaked in the rain many, many times over the past two decades. The original leather wraps held up just fine when cared for reqularly. The twine or cording that held the leather together actually fell apart and I just pitched it all in the trash. Looking back on it, I may have been able to salvage the leather itself and restitch them back on. I had no idea that they were no longer available. I did inquire with the CycleArt folks and I am not quite ready to part with the $150 they need to work their madjic. Thanks to all for the ideas and imput.

If you're concerned about thin-ness of steeringwheel wrap from a cushion standpoint, put a first wrap of your favorite cushioned tape, then wrap with the leather - the stuff is reasonably tough, judging from the shape of the wrap I put on my daughter's car three years ago...WheelSkins brand.

Tell me more about stingray bar wrap. Did the use this as a full skin, stictch on or did they make a tape style wrap out of it?Any photos you know of?

Thanks,

handle bar strap

email me at info@thegripmasterusa.com. i would like to know exactly what you are looking for. we are about to introduce bike bar strap and would love some input.

if our leather golf grips will perform in the golf swing at 100+mph in the rain i believe they will do well on a bike. in fact no tape or vinyl has ever been able to perform with quality genuine leather.

regards,
