Coaster Brake Question
I found a single speed coaster brake bike, is there a way that I can remove the coaster brake arm and be able to ride it like a single speed and then put rim brakes on.

I would guess no. You would probably have trouble with the hub not catching when you start to pedal. But thats just a guess. Try it and let us know.

You can ride them as freewheel, but not by removing the arm. Search for "freecoaster". BMX/flatland riders do it all the time because it is the only way you can coast backwards without having the cranks move. You basically disable the brake parts but leave the rest the same.

I would assume that all you'd have to do is remove the two brake pads on the inside, and rea-assemble. Just leave the arm off when you do it.
Try it and see! The single-speed ones are really not that complicated on the inside.

Disassemble the left hand side of the hub and remove the brake pad component.

At one time, our resident coaster brake expert jimv gave some tips as to disabling the mechanism, which is what you need to do. Search for it, he put up some great diagrams. I looked and didn't see anything but try jimv

Pulling out the brake pads isn't going to allow you to backpedal. Not that you need to, but if you accidentally do it you might get some awful metal on metal action.
Also, coaster is rad, and most old coasters are laced to steel rims. Steel rims + rim brakes + wet weather = ruptured meatsacks.

yeh, the rims are steel, would a 700 rim fit on a 26 inch frame. By the way, the bike is a BMAC All Pro made for Kmart, it is rather old but in very good shape. I was looking at the welds( or lack of ) it looks like it glued or just spot welded.

I have futzed with a few of these down at ye olde co-oppe, it's a perfectly fine old gas pipe, lead sled cruiser but I would not put money unto it other than grease, tires, etc... Is it even drilled for a rear brake?

yes, it has a rear reflector on it right now. It even has a cool looking chainring cover. Solid cover with painted chainring holes.( weird huh) i will post pics tomoroow.
