I tend to 'wunder' if he's really so wonderful? He can TT, and is an OK climber, but it seems like there is too much pressure on him. Kind of like all of the pressure that was heaped on Boogerd after his 1998 Tour ride.

I will also be keeping an eye on Devloder. He has been close in the past.

How are those guys dark horses. Dark horse refers to someone who was given very little notice and surprised everyone. Van Heeswijk has been winning for years and both of them are 7:1 on Unibet. That puts them at the same odds as OGrady, 12th on the list.

A true dark horse would be Geert Omloop on Jartazi. Someone who actually stands a chance, but is on a small team and being overlooked. Unlike Mattan who went to the Cycling News squad, but still gets 8:1 for winning two years ago.

Looking at the list above, I would pick Pozzato, but I suspect he and most of the Italians may be saving it for the Pantalica on the 5th. Still, Pozzato may want to match Bartoli's accomplishments here. We'll see. Nuyens and Gilbert are team leaders now and are targeting the pillars, so it is uncertain that they will want to go into the red zone in these races, but who knows. I think that Devolder, Hammond, O'Grady, Hoste, Van Heeswijk, Flecha Hushovd, et al. are the likely picks in these next two races. Still Het Volk is a major classic. So some of the big guns may fire. I also like PVP, but is he ready this early? I don't think he'll have a chance in the Ronde or Roubaix, so maybe we'll see him at the finish.

Re: Mattan: Mattan won Ghent Wevelgem two years ago. Maybe you're thinking of that.

That's some bold predicting. Especially when you take into account that Bartoli and Ballerini are the only 2 Italians to win (out of less than a handful of non Belgians).

BTW - Do not to forget that Mattan's win at Ghent Wervelgem was compliments of his drafting a Belgian Motorcycle.

Here are a few more shots from today. The team checked into a hotel in Gent today as for races of this caliber, teams have to spend the night there. There are several other teams here such as AG2R, Cofidis, Quickstep, Francaise des Jeux, Elkhaus and Rabobank.

A Cofidis rider cruises past the Francaise Des Jeux setup

And here are the Cofidis team bikes

Team Elkhaus is also staying here

Some of the AG2R riders went on a relatively late ride

Here are some of the DFL-Cyclingnews-Litespeed bikes

We also went to the team managers meeting, where all the important race info gets out.

Team DFL-Cyclingnews-Litespeed dinner the night before the race

Cheers,

Herbert

I think Boonen is going to help PVP try for the win, and if he isn't up to it...Boonen will take it.

No worries, the wind will die down to 37 km/h by the afternoon.

At least it's dry (more or less) hourly forecast for Ghent

BTW - For all f you Dutch/Flemish speakers, here'a a link
