Typical Cat5 pace/distance?

I know this is a dumn noob question but I gotta ask it. Whats the typical Cat5 pace/distance? I've been self training and riding as much as I can, and I know I'm way faster than I was last year but these damn Belgian riders are freaking fast. I just want to know where I stand. I think the series I'm racing in is way out of my league but I'm gonna show up every weekend and try my hardest.

Road races are 50 miles top. Pace? Well that definitely depends on your pack. I've been in groups that have gone 25mph, and groups that have barely made 20.

Pace doesn't matter.

Being able to cover accelerations over and over is what matters.

Around these parts, road races are 40 miles give or take and crits are roughly 35 minutes+. Speed depends on everything and anything.

correct.

That's for Mr. B.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming:

Remember that focusing on average speed will give you average results. You need to be able to accelerate to 30+mph for a minute or two...down to 17...up to 27...down to 20...up to 30...for at least half an hour.

This isn't as of such vital importance in road racing where if you've got a good base you probably won't get dropped unless there is a climb. In a crit though, if you haven't been doing fast group rides or training your anaerobic and VO2 systems you'll get shot out the back like you've just dropped anchor.

I'm a cat5 and can hold a decently high pace for 50 miles without any issue... The problem comes during attacks or accelerations.. Over and over and over.

Is there a website that lists upcoming events in your area? It should list the distance of events. Solo training only takes you so far. I'm new to racing this season, and group rides have really opened my eyes. If you can find one that's frequented by guys in higher cats than you, your Cat 5 races will seem that much easier.

This is a link to all the races that I plan on doing this year. All of them are within 10-20min drive from my house.

I don't get it. Why are you asking a bunch of Americans about typical Cat 5 races when you want to know how you will do in races in Belgium? They won't compare.

Now, if Botto hadn't been banned, he might be able to give you some insight into the Belgian race scene. But, as it stands, you won't get any useful information here.

Good luck.

Au contraire! If I am not mistaken, at least two other members have raced in kermesses (YMCA & roadwarrior).

Anyway, perhaps he just wants to know where he'd stack up in the american racing scene, as that's what most of us talk about.

Well reading comprehension owns you right now. The post wasn't to compare Americans to Belgians. I was just curious as to where I stand in comparison to stateside riders. I've been training solo and don't plan on spending the rest of my life in Belgium. The Belgian racing system is a little bit different than stateside and just wanted some opinions.

this might give you some idea. As stated it's not about the averages. It's about the ability to hang withthe surges.

the most cat 5 races ive been in (in the states) we averaged 22-23mph for 30 miles with some rollers and some steeper climbs.
