Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I disagree...

It is spot on for distances...

And pretty good for specific grades at one location...

It also helps in mapping out routes...

Its one main downfall is cumulative elevation over a certain distance but so are all topo map based systems...

Those are still amusement purposes.

I consider them vital statistics of a ride, unless every statistic is considered amusing...

Or are you being amusing...

It is not scientific and is used for personal benefit and therefore is for your amusement.

I disagree that all the information is not scientific..

Are we done???

I tried to provide some detailed information from a map service...

I will continue to use 'amusements' to provide information about various aspect of cycling...

If you don't like it, place me on your ignore list...

I was just saying that it is our amusement. Nothing wrong with it.

I road up that hill. It's really steep if you stop pedaling for a 1/10th of a second you are not going to make it up.

But it is really short. I think sycamore st. going up to mount washington is harder.

There is one steeper which runs from Ohio River Blvd. to Troy Hill near the 31st Street Bridge. It is slightly worse than the one in your picture. Stan W

Isn't that the unofficial steepest street in the world?

I can't even comprehend 37%. I think, riding around Austin, I've ridden one or two that get above 20%, momentarily. But 37? Geez. I think just balancing on that grade would be hard enough.

A bunch of guys are in the process of organizing a month-long dirty dozen training program. I think it will involve weekly group rides, find out more on the bike pittsbugh message board: https://bike-pgh.org/xdforum/viewthre.../620/#lastpost
