28.6 to 31.8

By mistake bought Shimano XTR Front Derailleur FD-M953 - 28.6mm, but really need 31.8mm. Is there a possibility to transform it to the right 31.8mm size?
Thanks for help!!!

I don't know if it's true for mountain derailleurs (I suspect, upon reflection), but new Shimano road derailleurs all have the same body and the clamp can be interchanged or removed (for braze-on installation). If not, I think you're SOL.

All newer Shimano derailleurs use similar shims. You should be able to go to a Shimano LBS and get the right shim for about $3.

You take out shims to go from 28.6mm to 31.8mm seatpost, not add. Since the op's dr started life as a 28.6, not a 31.8 with shims, his only choice is to return it for the right size dr.

McDave is right if the XTR isn't shimmed for 28.6, but is just that, 28.6. Most new Shimano derailleurs are 34.9, and come with shims for both 31.8 and 28.6. I just went through all this with an XT derailleur.

Good luck.
