bicycling is the Cosmo of the bike world. Every cover has articles titled:
"10 ways to do this" or 60 second to better something.
It is geared to entry level enthusiasts. Can you change a flat? Do you know what a chamois is? Then you don't need to read Bicycling anymore.

Bicycling is largely worthless.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Velonews which is my favorite and I like Cycle Sport alot too.

Bicycling sucks so hard, my grocery store won't even carry it. And they carry most everything.
Procycling, Cycle Sport, Ride, and Road are all good. Velonews is hot and cold, but I do subscribe to it. Road Bike Action is little more than an advertisement, but at least they're advertising items I'm interested in. And they have Bob Roll as a columnist, so you get a bit of humor with each issue.

Bicycling is the worst piece of Pay-ola trash out there. Useless articles, lame reviews, childish photography, elementary technique and more one sided advertising you will ever encounter. It's not even worthy of being on the bathroom floor at a bus depot.
Cycle Sport and Velonews are by far the best.

Cycling plus for reviews and info
Cycle Sport for racing news...but, it always comes to my house a month after I see it in the stores (I live in the US). I'll probably let the subscription die and just buy an issue or two off the newstands.

But really, go to any Borders or B&N magazine section and flip through the five or six different mags you'll find there. Pick the one you like.
I've never looked through Bicycling, as it's not so common in the UK, but I've heard it's crap and just recycles the same stories every few months...

last few times i wasted my money on that POS magazine, every article was about doping, each issue seemed to have an interview with david millar, and countless pics of riders with 'i support drug free sport' bands on.
these days, when i want a glossy english language mag, it's pro cycling. it's not perfect, but they don't preach.

- now, wait a minute! Bicycling's editors work very hard to highlight the latest and best developments in cycling, such as the recent articles on the hip new Critical Mass movement and cycling in Dubai!
/sarcasm_off
- yep, dumped that rag after i saw the first few issues... don't know what was worse, the automobile, Viagra and sex pillow ads, or the ultra-lame equipment reviews...
- i'd go with 'anything other than' - good recommendations by others here...

Bicycling sucks, but unfortunately they're aren't really many alternatives. Velonews and Cycle Sport just focus on racing and high-end bikes, which makes them practically useless if you have no interest in dopers and their shenanigans. Cycling Plus is an excellent magazine and a good model for what Bicycling could be, but a lot of their information is not useful if you live in the States. Being a British publication, Cycling Plus reviews a lot of gear and bikes that aren't sold in the U.S. Their reviews are topnotch, however, if you can actually find the products they review anywhere.
Bicyling used to be a much better magazine, comparable to Cycling Plus. Sometime along the way, they decided to try and be hip and trendy rather than useful. Style Man is the perfect example of all that's wrong with Bicyling. It is supposed to be funny, I guess, but comes across as snarky. Their reviews are almost useless and seem to be more an extension of their advertising department than editorial. I have a sneaking suspicion that Bicycling chooses which products to review based on which companies buy the most ad space, and their reviews are rarely ever critical or helpful. Occasionally Bicycling surprises me, however, and has a well-written article such as one they had this year about cyclists who had been killed in accidents.
The best thing that can be said of Bicyling is that it is very inexpensive, so it's probably worth the price of the subscription. Seriously, do you want to know the best source for bicyling information? Online forums such a bikeforums.net, roadbikereview.com, as well cycling web sites such as cyclingnews.com and velonews.com

+1 I just got my first copy and I think it's a lot better than Bicycling.

Although I did renew my subscription to Bicycling; however, I am a big fan of Road Bike Action Magazine (www.roadbikeaction.com). It was like $20 for a year (or cheaper) but they have a good balance of Pro tour stuff with improvements in your own riding (climbing, nutritrion, descending, suppliers, parts and certian rides for all of us, who are looking for something different.
I checked out Road Bike Action on the web (thanks for the link, by the way) and it looks pretty good. I may switch to that one.

Bicycle Quarterly. Oriented more towards long distance and recreational riding. Reviews of modern bikes with actual criticism. Lots of cycling history that is very interesting. And actual scientific testing of products and concepts that has not been seen in a bike magazine since the 80's. It's an expensive magazine because the subscribers carry the freight, not the advertisers and it is printed in black and white but it is such a good magazine I keep all my back issues to reread each winter while all other magazines get round-filed.

(got me hooked w/the 'what makes a good randonneur bike' sample article!)
- thanks for this tip... never knew about this one!
