Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help me pick a new compact crankset

Ok so first of all, I'm no racer. This bike is purely a treat for myself, for working so hard the past year.

Frame: BD cheapo carbon.
SRAM Red shifters, F & R D.
KCNC brakes

edit: settled! Saw some KCNC K-type and I thought, well, It's less than half the price of anything I wanted that was carbon, and only 100 grams more. And I get to use q-rings. I'm happy. It was $230 shipped.

so what compact cranks should I get? I'm hoping to keep it around or under $600.

I was really hoping for a nice light set that is compatible with my Rotor SABB and compact q-rings. the SABB is compatible with all Shimano and FSA cranks that uses external bearing cups.

I've been looking at some Stronglights

Stronglight Vulcan + Token Ceramic BB (a little over $500) the the spider is alloy, heavier, but it won't rip right out of the chainrings.
Stronglight Pulsion Activ-link (right around $625)
Stronglight Pulsion ISIS + Token Ceramic BB (just a tad under $600)

What can you guys suggest? And please don't say, Shimano. I'm very happy with my R700 on my comuter, but it's a bit heavy.

Thanks

Stronglights???? Definitely not. I believe those are known to fail (just buy looking at them, you don't have to be a ME to know why).

Campy makes compacts. Check out FSA too (even though I have heard many bad stories about FSA)....

well, 'cause according to many threads here, it's made from the same mold pedal force uses. And most of the reviews from BF members are very positive.

that's funny 'cause I am a ME. And I'm pretty sure I'll be struck down by the cycling god if I use a campy crank with non-campy everything else. Although i did think about Fulcrum. It looks pretty good.

Well there you have it. And FSA really sucks. Either go Ultegra SL Compact or the lighter Dura-Ace and live withhtfuthe 39.

I can be a weight weenie myself (I own a pair of the lightest bottle cages available) but when it comes to some parts it's more important that they not be ****. Save the 100g somewhere else.

To sum up: buy Dura-Ace. Notice I didn't actually say the "S" word once.

I'm Very Happy with my Sram Force. Works great... not too heavy... classic looks... great quality.

I ride Campy Chorus in CF with UT which is an outboard bearing BB. I love the design...my favorite. If you don't need CF and few do including me, consider a Campy Centaur alloy CT with UT. Simple, elegant, strong and beautiful.
HTH.

^^ I second the Campy crank. I just went to one from my FSA crank and it's a big improvement.

believe me, if I can do a 39 around here, I would. I have to run 34-27 on most of the hills around here. If I had a 39, no way I'd make it up.

Is the 35 mm brake nut that came with your KCNCs long enough for your fork?

Extralite's new QRC compact will be lighter and less expensive than the Stronglight. You'll have to buy rings, but you're still about the same price.

You won't be disappointed, it's a great crank for the money.

FYI, run away as fast as you can from Stronglights or Time cranks. (I know the OP didn't go that way... but just wanted to put that out there) They simply aren't worth the risk.

The KCNC cranks are very good for the money.

I caught an ebay auction 1 day before it ended. And yes, it's a whole kit, with BB and all.

Yea, I did see the threads and pics of broken cranks, but the bling of those cranks really had me going. Oh well, I'm sure I'll be happy with the KCNCs, at least until My FSA "modified" Gossamer cranks are ready. Thanks all.
