Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking to buy a road bike, is this a good deal?

For $450 I'm being offered a Connondale bought new in 2000 and had a lot of upgrades. Here are the details.

- Mavic Open 4CD clincher rims (Mavic MA3M hub up
front & Shimano Ultegra 8-speed hub on the rear);
- Campy Record Seatpost;
- Serfas ATWD Saddle;
- Shimano 105 brakeset with aero levers;
- Shimano Ultegra front derailleur;
- Shimano Dura-Ace rear derailleur;
- Forte Kevlar Bomb-Proof 700x28C tires;
- Shimano Dura-Ace downtube shifters;
- Shimano Dura-Ace crankset (53 x 39);
- Cannondale CODA (SPD-compatible) pedals;
- 2000 Cannondale 63cm CAD3 Aluminum frame and fork;
- Deda bar tape;
- Cinelli quill stem;
- Dura-Ace headset.

Is there some questions I should ask before I make a decision? I'm new so I have no idea what I should be lookin for.

Yes, a good deal. Anything new in that range would be vastly inferior. You could pay double and not get as nice a bike.

how does it look? is it immaculate? been lovingly cared for and maintained? and of course, is it your size? a 63cm is an XL frame... has it ever been wrecked?

When it comes time to get new tires, take a long look at Rivendell's Roly Poly and Ruffy Tuffy tires.

Wait a second...

Open 4CD rims were outdated by 2000 (the Reflex rim replaced it in 95 and since then the Open Pro has come out)

Aero levers? Does that mean this thing has downtube shifters? That's pre 1992!!!

Quill stem? 8 speed? If this is a 2000 frame, he's taken some of the parts off and put older parts on to sell it. It could still be a decent bike, but you'd need to get some details on those components (STI or downtube shifters, 8 9 or 10 speed rear) for us to tell you for sure.

Caad3s came out in 98 actually. They ride like bricks and mine cracked. This bike has downtube shifters? WTH? You can find a better deal amigo.

Sounds like a Frankenbike...as in a parts *****. Not saying it's crap, but better deals can be had. Last fall I picked up a 1998 Allez SE, mint perfect condition appeared to be unridden, for $175. and it had 105 drivetrain....I admit I stole it.

Here's the pic by the way. I'll also ask him about shifters

Yep, not worth $450 in my opinion. It may be a newer frame, but it's god all old technology parts on it. I'd only buy that if I was planning on just using the frame and maybe a few other small parts.

Someone should tell the seller that "upgrades" doesn't mean you put older parts on it!

It's really hard to judge with such a hodge podge of parts, but the main question on my mind is would you be ok with having to reach between your legs to shift gears? Most of us roadies quit that and got shifters on our handlebars in the 90's. Much safer and more comfortable.

If you just want a starter bike, I suppose $300 isn't bad for it. At least you can keep the frame and upgrade the parts when/if you get more into it. But I think you can find better if you're patient.

Marketing talk. More comfortable - how? It's the same thing except for shifting, and it's not that difficult.

I got a 2000 Bianchi for under $100 this year, the parts weren't as nice but it had STI shifters. In my opinion it's maybe a $150-200 bike.

Move on. For $450 you could buy a gently used entry level bike that's 1 or 2 years old.

I got a 1999 Trek 2300 road bike for around that price on craigslist, the owner used it once and barely used it since, it was full ultegra with rolf wheels so thats all I needed. Just sift through craigslist for good used bikes with easily upgradeable parts, try to stay away from stuff thats uncommon or uses old technology that you are gonna want to ditch.

That ain't marketing talk. Even though i'm a retro grouch myself, anything where you don't have to take your hands away from the brakes to shift is safer than not.

To the OP: Why bother cross-posting if you're not even going to bother replying to your other spam posts.

Well it's obviously designed for a quill/threaded because that's the original fork. So either c-dale still made bikes in 2000 with quill stems or this bike is older than he claims.

C-dale did still make bikes with quill stems in 2000.

But I don't see the one the OP posted here: https://www.cannondale.com/bikes/00/cusa/

No road bikes with downtube shifters in '00, either.

My price for this one would be $150-180, if it fits.

Is it me or does that frame not look like a CAAD3? Don't CAAD3's have a larger diameter downtube?
