Is everybody all SSCXed out after the Rob Roy group buy? I'm selling my old guitar, so I'll have some ca$hmoney in the bank sometime soon, and I've been wanting a good SS cross bike (with canti mounts) for a while now...

i would be up for a NJS frame group buy also, but as he said its pretty far fetched. We would need a mothaload of frames to get a price reduction worth the trouble

The NJS groupbuy would probablt be plain impossible but how about a Kazane groupbuy instead? They're close enough to real Keirin frames, lugged steel and all.

I dont think that it would be impossible. The logistics of it would be to get someone to buy a bunch of frames in sizes etc. and stockpile them until we had a container full of stuff, and then mail em in a shipping container, and then have someone pick up and ship the individual frames. The kazane buy could be really cool as well, I like that idea.

I'm starting to really like this idea, and I think it's as feasible as an alien group buy. The thing to consider here though, is that both frames are double butted 4130 and lugged and as far as I know the geometry is similar. The thing to consider is that the retail price difference is 200 dollars, and off the bat Alien can powder coat a whole load of different colors. Also, I would think that keirin culture probably isnt hurting for customers for the kazane frames.

Edit:
I just compared the geometry of the two, it appears to me they are close to the same. (I compared a 52cm kazane and a 53cm Alien) seat angle was exactly the same, Headtube angle was a couple degrees different etc. I dont know a lot about frame geometry, but they seem like similar frames.

I'd also go in on a ss/fg MBT frame because my severely abused Monocog can't last forever.

I can think of a numerous reasons why a cheap group buy tandem frame would be awesome.

1. they are fast as hell with two people willing to hammer
2. tandem track racing!
3. a tandem may actually get my wife on a bicycle
4. blindfolding the stoker can be fun.
5. great for dates (although I'm beyond that stage...see #3).
6. great way to ride with a friend who's slower than you.
7. Descending big hills on a tandem = FAST, especially with a ****** friend acting as stoker.
8. etc.

Theres a problem in your logic.
Tandems arent usually cheap, especially if they are made for us. If you want a tandem, various retailers sell sub $500 models. I just dont think we are going to find a group buy friendly company willing to build them for a cheap price, nor are we going to find enough people to buy them to offset the price of production and allow said company to provide them to us at discount.

Oh I know it would be awesome. I would buy one in a heartbeat, despite the fact I would have nowhere to put it. I'm sorry if I seemed cranky, I just shed a tear everytime I think of how awesome it would be and then have my dreams crushed.

This sort of seems like the most feasible option at the moment. Has anyone seen any of those frames built up or ridden them? I'd like to know what they are ACTUALLY like.

IRO is tried and trusted, but doing a group buy on a new frame that noone has yet could be a bad move.
