crash pics - taxi driver into group of cyclists on miami beach :(
from a local forum
"Every Sunday there over 100 bicyclist that ride to the beach from numerous places in the county. But today for 7 of them it was a bad day. The taxi driver fell asleep behind the wheel and hit them and drag 3 of the them for 150ft."

Good thread about this in A & S. Take the time to read the comments on the article in the Miami Herald. You will find none anywhere that are more virulently anti-bike.
The road is three lanes each way with a wide shoulder, but the shoulder apparently is unrideable due to debris. Note that the cab is in the center lane. I sure hope he swerved into that lane and the bikes weren't there.

man the cab company is going to have a heart attack when they find out how expensive those bikes will be to replace...
****ing morons driving when they are tired. Hope the guy who hit the windshield is ok, looks like one hell of a hit. The guy whose bike is under the car probably just got bounced off the hood but damn that is so much carnage.
Would be odd if they were biking in the center lane, sadly there isn't a good picture showing the accident scene from front to back, but it looks like there are plenty of bikes in the other lane and the driver probably swerved into the middle lane after knocking out the first couple of riders.

I knew Cannondale's had a problem with cracking! Knew it!
- seriously, cabbies are just about the lowest of the low, scum of the earth people out there. I hope this one never gets behind the wheel again.

it is, but really the good cab drivers are a minority smaller than the number of male ants in an ant community
Public transportation drivers in general are very low class people and it's a shock that some of them would be trusted with such a responsibility as driving other people around.

Kerlenbach, I used your post to cite the Miami Herald article, not to group you with the scum verbally disparaging public transportation drivers. No intent, whatsoever, to group you there.

I didn't see in the article that they gave him a breathalyzer or not. I hope the reason they haven't pressed charges yet is because they haven't completed their investigation.

My thoughts and prayers to go out to each of those riders and their families.
People falling asleep at the wheel and hitting me from behind is the one thing that scares me about road cycling. Guess that's why i do most of my riding on the weekends and on the local military bases around here. A little less traffic to contend with.

Seems like everyone is anti-somebody. I'm sure public transportation drivers would be offended by the above comments, just the way cyclists are offended by the Miami Herald comments.

No, not really. Get into a big city and do some urban riding. The only people that drive more dangerously than cabbies are tourists that just don't know where they're going (even that's debatable). The difference? Tourists almost always go at a snail's pace.

exactly, but it seems you are too naive to see the light. Cabs are the most beat up vehicles in a city, why? because nearly all of their drivers run into things and squeeze through places they shouldn't in order to make a buck and then probably waste it on something worthless. I don't live in a large city nor will I ever take a cab in a large city, it's a waste of money compared to other public transportation options.

My favorite quote from the comments section of the article was:
"the driver fell asleep so he is not to blame"
Couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. I guess it's helpful to read comments on articles like that so we know what kind of people are out there.

I guess I didn't make it that far. I'd like to see how the reactions of these anti-cyclists would change if their kid got nailed by a guy who fell asleep...or even someone they are good friends with who for some reason rode a bike. It's funny how it's always hilarious until it happens to you, then you miraculously change sides and everyone else changes sides to defend you because you're one of them and not one of these road hogging cyclists. Cars take up more room than bikes, why the hell don't people complain about them as much...
