Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Even a hairline crack or deep scratch in carbon fiber can result in sudden failure under stress. Your frame needs to be inspected by the factory very carefully and you should not ride it until they are 100% sure the frame is in perfect condition.

I just went back to the bike shop and there is some frame damage, so it looks like I'm getting a 2009 tarmac pro sl. Thank you for your replies. Hopefully there won't be any trouble with the insurance company.

At the very least replace the fork. I'd never trust the steerer again. Having the fork come apart as you hit a minor bump at 30mph when coasting down a hill will not make for a good day... I'd get a new fork regardless of whether it's deemed fine.

However, with a destroyed headset I suspect the head tube is toast.

I'd do the same with aluminum. And a steel bike that's taken the same impact will never ride the same, so might as well replace it. Unless it's a cheap beater already.

1. detach damaged carbon fiber frame from components
2. insert titanium frame
3. reattach components
