Thought I was a tough rider!

Fellow cyclists, I have a quick story for you. I was riding alone several weeks ago when I came across this white bearded fella cycling in my neck of the woods. I rode along side and chatted for a few minutes, you know, all that introduction stuff. We ended up stopping at a corner and exchanged information to hook up later and ride. We did, and several times. Joe had just moved up from Florida now in western NC. He asked me to ride with him to show him some routes in the area. We did just that. In the past few weeks we rode a 86, 72, 97, and 50 mile rides. Come to find out, he was training for an ironman event! He had been training already for about 14 weeks. Inspiring to say the least when I found out he was 61 years old. I thought I had endurance! This guy was awesome! He heads out tomorrow to Phoenix for the ironman event. Now, I've got the perfect partner to train with for my first triathlon that I had already been planning to do for several months. It's funny how things work out and how new friends just pop into our lives. I'm 48 and hope that I'm trucking along like my friend when I'm 61. Truly inspiring! Any other inspiring stories out there? Warmest regards, R

You can do it.
Started this year, met a group of Very Experience riders.
They have taken me 10,400 miles.
You can read about the rides in The Texas Discussion.
The Dead Squirrel Ride, no 2, no 3.
I am planning 20,000 miles next year.

Harumph!!

61 is YOUNG!

Wish I was there again!

So, I will just have to content myself with a sprint triathlon next summer.

You're going to ride 55 miles a day average every day? Do you work or have a family? Will they be with you?

I thought I was doing good with my 100 miles a week.

There's not enough time in a day for me to ride that much and work, let alone pay attention to my wife.

Where at in Western NC, There are several routes that go right past my driveway. Seeing the riders every weekend is what got the wife and I started riding. We are always looking to meet people we can ride with.

Thanks for the response. Wish we were a little closer, I live a bit north of you in the Wilkes county area but plan on doing some rides in the Asheville area

All I can say is WOW! That is a whole lot of miles for a first year rider. You would do yourself right by getting some advice from a coach or other expert. You don't need an over training injury to bite you. I get to retire in May and plan to take my training, racing and riding from 12 hrs/wk to 16-20 hrs/wk. My adviser says that I just can't add 100% more time in the saddle without risking injury or over training.

A young female teacher from our school is going to AZ to do that ironman. I have gotten to visit with her a couple of times, very fun!

I wish her the best in the ironman competition. I just watched the Lake Placid ironman (not sure if it was a rerun) on the telly the other day and it was great!
