from my understanding cross season is in the fall/winter because of the other race seasons(i.e. road/mountain) going on and it was a way for road cyclists to keep in shape in the off months. plus it's not as fun in hot/dry weather. gloomy, rainy, muddy, and/or snowy conditions seem to be ideal cross weather.
i could be all wrong though.

Cross racing has given me a greater appreciation for other types of racing though. Last year I entered two mtb races and plan to compete in quite a few more this year. In time I could even see myself cutting back my road season to accomodate more mtb racing. I guess that all depends on how successful I am this year off road.

Cross has a "season" in which it occurs. That season is fall and winter. Why is football played in the fall/ winter? Why is baseball played in the summer? Its just the way it is.

Cross season is typically during the winter so the roadies and mtb racers can race during the summer.
Cross is my favorite type of racing, and I'm sure there's others out there who feel the same. I wish there were cross races all year round. I would gladly give up my weekends to cross racing instead of road/mtb. It would also be nice to switch it up (for those of us who don't care about cup points of standings) and race mtb one weekend, road the next, then cross and have all types of races available to you any given race weekend.

I have not raced 'cross ...yet. But based on my spectating and various YouTube videos I would have to say the reason that there is very little 'cross racing in the summer is there is a sever shortage of reliable mucky, deep, filthy, MUD in the summer.
Just my 2 cents.
