This is the coolest damn idea ever.
I'm toying around with the idea of trying to organize something like that where I'm at. Get the fixed gear guys out in the dirt and mud. Anyone have any suggestions for getting something like this off the ground? Obviously I gotta find a suitable course, which shouldn't be too hard because there's a cyclocross scene already in Eugene, but I'm coming at this from not knowing a whole lot about cyclocross in general besides the fact that it's bad ass.

Things I learned by doing sludgement day:
1. A KHS track bike will fit 35c cross tires... barely. There is no clearance for a brake, however.
2. Time pedals work VERY well in mud and sand.
3. That first lap SUCKED. You know how doing an alleycat as an out-of-towner is hard, because you don't know where anything is? Imagine that everybody is from out of town so there is nobody to follow (and the people you do follow go the wrong way), and there are no addresses, just vague locations on a hand-drawn map. Also, large fields of mud to cross.
4. VD had the best checkpoint, but generic bike drew got to see the most crashes:
I definitely did one of these.

this race made people race. Crihs, the #2 finisher wearing that 5 boro generals jersey, pronounced it one of his top 5 favorite races he's ever raced.... and he collapsed at the finish line with agony on his face. there was a great sprint across the field to the finish.
the checkpoints required people to run through sand and water... ride through mud, find their way around fences, run around a playground, ride on gravel, ride through more mud, ruts, puddles; run up a hill of soft construction dirt; moon manhattan, and then do it all over - again and again. a lot of the race was on paved surfaces, but there was a lot of off road riding from the roads and paths to the checkpoints.
if you couldn't ride it, you had to carry your bike to each and every checkpoint. those were the rules.
the course wound up being close to 16 miles; the finishers finished in just under an hour and a half. this means that it was a slow, strenuous race. 36 people registered, and 25 completed the race. mech difficulties encountered along the race included: a crank arm that fell off; a front wheel axle nut that fell off; many flat tires; much mud not being cleared from tires or clipless pedals; and a broken spoke or two.
i strongly encourage people around the world to throw similar races.
GET MUDDY.

If it's like last year, most people will be riding fixed.
