Buying bikes you don't need?
Do any of you buy bikes or no reason whatsoever?
I have a roadie...a backup roadie...and for no good reason whatsoever, I'm thinking of building up another roadbike. Why? No reason. The frame is on discount.
What I SHOULD do is take that money and buy a touring bike or mountain bike. I don't need another roadbike. But I want it!!!!!
Anyone else struggle with buy crap for no good reason at all?

Nope. Every bike I've bought has either been to replace one I outgrew or broke, or to fulfill a new role I didn't have before. I have a road bike, cross bike, and now an MTB.
I bought an older road bike for $80 on craigslist last year thinking of making a fixie, and when I didn't build up a fixie I perma-loaned it to a friend who was bikeless, since the cross bike with panniers and road bike basically fit my two modes of road biking, and another derailleur'ed road bike made no sense to me.

Sure do. Right now I have three very good road bikes (Cervelo, Seven and Waterford), a Tri bike, a fixed gear, and a mountain bike. I'm looking for a Paramount to build up as a classic restored bike. I don't know when I'll ride it but I want it.

It's the american way.... consumerism as entertainment.
So far I've managed not to, but even though I love my titanium road bike and it is the right bike for the rides I like to do, I'm jonesing for a really light carbon bike. Too much time looking at bikeforums.

This seems like kind of an odd question. Do any of us need a road bike at all? Or anything more than a basic commuting or cruising around bike, IF that? Hardly any bicycle is a necessity, at least the way that most of the folks that post in this forum use them. I can tell you that my life without my road bike and mountain bike would maybe have two fewer opportunities to have fun, but other than that would be unaffected. Life without my commuting bike would actually be noticeably more difficult or irritating, since getting to work on certain days would become more difficult or impossible, but I still don't need it, it just makes things a bit easier. So the question of buying an "unnecessary" bike seems like an odd question when the first one is a luxury or recreation item to begin with.

Touring is overrated.

Define - Need. On the want side I would like a Pinarello Prince Carbon built - but not sure I want it more than the 10K in my pocket.

I always sell to buy... sure there's some expense involved, but it's usually fairly minimal. This also means that I never have more than 1 bike for it's intended purpose (i.e. 1 road bike, 1 mtb, etc). Same with guitars. Sell to buy.

Sometimes I feel that getting a different bike is going to help reignite (in me) a passion for bicycling. My life-experience (and my experience with bicycles) tells me that getting something new often only produces a momentary high or can even be a "let-down". If you get something that is significantly different (than what you already have) then at least you can satisfy your curiosity about it. I have found that most of my endeavors and money-spent went (in the end) to satisfying my curiosity.

I justify it by loaning them out to bikeless friends. That way I can satisfy my urge to collect while convincing myself that I'm helping others!

Almost anyone who owns a bike has this problem some just have it worse then others.
No one "needs" anything but food, oxygen and maybe sleep.

I'm buying a bike I don't need this year... but then it's the insurance company's fault: I had a bike stolen last summer and they cut me a check for a significant amount of money, but only if I bought another bike with it (check made to my name and a bike shop of my choice)... so now I'm adding a titanium road bike to my carbon road bike... as mawtangent put it - just to satisfy my curiosity; "how does the ti compare to carbon?"
