Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We did a nice 80 mile loop towards Lake Simcoe this morning. It was right at the freezing mark when we left, with strong winds around 20mph. But it was a gorgeous ride. Leaves are turning nicely - my crappy cell phone pics don't do the colors justice.

-4C in Edmonton and I just got back from a quick 40km ride. Since this is my first year riding and spent the last month out of town, coming home to this and riding was a pretty big shock. I wasn't sure what colour my toes were going to be when I got my shoes off. It was pretty cool riding while it lightly snowed though. Now I'm off to thanksgiving dinner and I wont feel as guilty for stuffing myself.

Did 21k of double and single track with my son, brother in-law and nephew. What a great way to spend a few hours but I did miss my roadbike.

53 miles of mostly un-paved farm roads, 33 degrees, cloudy, snow on the ground.

Bought some of those chemical hand warmers at a hardware store on the ride - win!!!

A very chili 68 F in Richmond, VA today. I got my first ride in since having my rear wheel fixed (broke a spoke) and it felt great! Rode through a civil war battle field (Cold Harbor), which I find interesting. Although I joke about the cold temp, I did see a few riders out in jackets already.

Saturday morning, I went and rode with the non-drop ride. A couple of guys were taking it easy for various reasons, so it was sort of a slow ride back. But still enjoyable.

I got back to the house, and lacked 2 miles getting to 5009, which was the goal for the 5009 club on bikejournal.com. So I took the Worksman down to the grocery store and got over 5009 miles with that trip.

Today, I rode out to White Rock Lake. It was first time I'd been out there with the Sojourn. I managed to not get passed by a single person. That was cool.

Did a standard ride today. Yesterday was actually much more interesting; a hike in the Berkshires, including the very freaky (and supposedly haunted) Hoosac Tunnel.

The pictures from the beach onward are from Rowan's and my Melbourne trip this past weekend.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/1430288...7621633069421/

However, there were heaps of cyclists out this weekend. The Around the Bay in a Day cycling event, which attracts 10,000+ cyclists, is on next weekend and there were likely many out this weekend preparing for the event.

This weekend was the Melbourne Marathon which had 23,000 participants. Part of their route was along the street where we stayed, so I got to see several hundred of them in action.

My wife's family is from Barrie; next time we go there (when the ground isn't covered in snow) I'll have to rent a bike and do the lake.

Did a solo ride today around the Snoqualmie Valley with spectalular views of Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker and the Cascades.

Back from my ride. Mild showers turned to heavy. Heavy turned into finding the closest train station before we drowned or were vapourized by the lightning. Emotionally scarred now. Jaw hurts from gritting my teeth.
Compounded by the fact that they don't recognise Canadian Thanksgiving in Holland. Weekend is over before we could try it again.

My weekend ride consisted of cruising around with my friends on a bmx bike because I had strep throat. It was still fun and we built a scraper bike as well using a bmx bike and a mtb. We rode around the neighborhood and then went to another friends house to play poker and chill outside by the fire.

Happy Bday ID64! Were you two headed north on Don Mills on Sat? Yellow or orange kit? I'm always wondering if/when I'll run into some BF'ers here!

Great weekend of riding

Saturday 52 km, group of 4, 2 flats, beautiful day allot of nice colours, clear skies calm wind, started off at 0° ended around 4°. Easy pace
Sunday 95 km , group of 4, 30 km winds and gusty. Started at -1° and had to watch for ice mixed in with the leaves on the roads from the overnight rain ended around 4°. Easy pace
Monday 52 km, Solo, Nice that traffic was light, still had 2 rednecks honk and yell. 1° ended around 4°, SST for a hour.

Can't wait for dinner, it smells good.

70km ride in Southern Ontario (Essex County), temps are far below normal for this time of year, around 10C. Small group (for us) of 16 hardy souls were out making room for the turkey dinner this afternoon.

Happy Thanksgiving

Not to get booted..week-end ride was swell. Mid sixty's but a big crosswind that seemed to materialize right when I got on the bike and died down when I stopped

I was going to do SactoCX #2, but was picking up the vibes that I just didn't have sufficient spousal capital to expend. That would have made three weeks in a row of racing, during the so-called "off-season." I did some honey-do's and listened to the Niners get squashed on the radio.

I did get a quick ride around the park to test out a derailleur adjustment on the CX bike, and that was good enough for a happy husband and dad.

Happy Thanksgiving to our Northern Neighbors.

Canuck is derogatory? My wife wears it with pride, as do all my Canadian friends, family, and readers... Maybe I'm missing something here? But cap, if I've offended you, my sincerest apologies...
