RC Car Update
I am going away this afternoon for a week so decided to go visit the farmer and RC guy.
I told the farmer what I did and after a couple of minutes of belly laughing, he says "you don't want it back do you?" I explained I didn't want to cause damage to the environment and that it had been done in anger and haste.
As it turns out, it landed in some long grass on the side of the pond and wasn't submerged. He had already fished it out and given it to his grandson. He also told me the pond has been catching fertilizer and diesel drippings for 40+ years.
I drive a little further up the hill to the former RC owners place and he and his wife are out raking leaves. I introduced myself and started to tell the story when his wife craked the biggest grin and started to chuckle. I guess he told her someone took his car after he hit them with it and she had gone off on him.
I explained the problem I had with his repeated behavior and his wife says "I have been telling him for months that someone is going to clean his clock".
Well, it didn't come to that and he wasn't very upset about losing the car. He was more concerned about the legal aspects of his actions.
So, at the end of the day, a kid has a new toy, a problem user has been educated and disarmed, his wife and the farmer had a good laugh, nobody was injured and we part with a handshake.
I end up with a small nick in my rim and gouge in the tire. I can live with that.

It would seem lucky for you that the kid's parents aren't good friends with any lawyers. Any scumbag lawyer worth his/her salt could take that case and somehow make it your fault, a traumatic event for the kid, blah blah blah...
Not saying that it would be right, just saying it's well within the possibilities of our legal system.

I think given the circumstances this is the best way it could have turned out. Respect for going back and disarming the situation.

I am sure the guy has a good lawyer or two though. Houses in that area go for 5-8 million so he probably isn't hurting. I don't think he will be mentioning it to his lawyer.

Sorry-not the "kid," the RC car owner. It shows my own personal bias that I assumed it was a kid...

Well done. I imagine it took a lot of courage to go back up there. He could be irrational and show up with a shotgun and blame you for trespassing...

Behavior like that is frowned upon there.

Funny story with the best possible outcome. Good you followed up and went back. Now you've got closure on this and not wondering if the RC guy will be targeting all passing cyclists. Well done.

Yeah - also props to the RC guy for owning up to his error and accepting the loss of the car as being due to his own mistake. Warm fuzzies all around here.

Genetics have failed me
I guess it actually does hold water that Canadians are more level headed in comparison.

Fantastic outcome! Agree with poster below: it's a big gain for you that you get to keep your route. Imagine spending the rest of your life wondering if it's safe to ride there.
Oh...when you went to visit the farmer and RC guy, did you ride you bike?
cheers

Raising the Abyss
I did a doubletake on the OP's other thread to confirm that the RC owner wasn't ~10 yrs old. I think that even Mother Theresa would've presumed that it wasn't an adult.
