A Miyata for 50obo - Im a crazy not to buy it?
A guy is selling a Miyata for 50obo. He doesnt know the model, just the make which is a miyata. Im new to this. So is this a no-brainer? Are not Miyata high end road bike? Thanks

No, not every Miyata was a high end road bike. They made a full line of bikes, like almost all of the brands back then. Everything from pretty basic, to great. At the $50 point, it doesn't matter much.
Its towards the low end (stem shifters), but it has a decent crankset and what looks like alloy rims. Again, it is a no brainer... Now if you were expecting a $500 bike for $50, no, its not a top of the line Miyata. Or course, if it was, there are enough knowledgeable scoopers out there that it would be long gone if it was. Even towards the low end, someone will scoop it up, clean it up, and you will see it again in a few weeks at a 3X price.

really? I think that would depend alot of the OP location. If she/he is in a big market like LA or Beantown or near a big college perhaps he could make a few dollars on it. It looks like it needs a tune up and or a overhaul and that takes time and or money. It also needs bartape and to make it more apealing atleast one new tire.
$50 for the bike + $10 bartape + $15 for tire + $40 to 100 for labor = $115 to 175 invested. $230+ then seems like alot.
Now if your one of those flippers that wipes it down with WD40 to make shine and maybe put some air in the tires yes you sould sucker someone out of $100 to $150 or so.

That's a bit rude and I think you are a bit off on your price estimate. This bike is a great opportunity to learn about fixing up bikes and with a little bit of common sense you could save that $100 price tag you added on. I understand the "You need tools" argument, but it's not too tough to get by with a basic set.

If you are planning to flip it, you should have the tools/time/aptitude/pile of parts so you can rehab it at a reasonable cost. If you are planning to keep it and lack the tools and aptitude, find a co-op, they can fill in that gap for you.
If you do not have the time/tools/aptitude/interest to rehab it, then pass. You can end up upside down, even on a free bike, if you pay retail for all of the service and parts.
My comment on the 3X was directed at some DKO that would give it a quick wipe off, and attempt to resell it to someone for $150. Myself, I put a lot of work into bikes, and make a lot less $$ than the DKO crowd, but its a hobby and I enjoy working on bikes, so I am fine with that.

I was browsing the classifieds today for raod bikes, and i guess someone bought the miyata and put on new tires and is selling the bike for 150. The title of the classified ad is "high-quality Japanese bike", i guess he's trying to flip it

Typical... I bet seller put used tires on there, or at best, bottom of the barrel cheapies.
