Two down!

Today after work I drove over to the UPS store and dropped off two bikes, bound for Bandon, OR. It feels great to send them on their way, as it decreases my total # and increases my garage space.

Bye bye to the Raleigh Super Course and the Peugeot PXN-10. I'm sure jdawginsc will approve of my Raleighless-ness, although cudak888 will most definitely not ...so its a wash!

It helps me feel a little bit better about my Trek 970 pick up, which is currently looking like this:





I will be doing some evaluation throughout the week on what will be leaving next. The smaller bikes my son has been getting into, so the PXN-10 (52cm) is safe for now. I've been doing work on the Midget and the Jungle Junker Allez, but ran into a snag with the Allez because the cheap Shimano 600 shifter teeth were all sheared off, so off to the co-op I go (if I get some time this week) so find a donor lever or a set. 'Junker' sure is accurate! Also, I found out how that left side chainstay got such a deep tire rub mark in it - the rear wheel must be mildly taco'd and every time it rolls around - thump thump thump against the chainstay with the tire. It is horrendously out of true. I don't know if I can bring it back - we'll see!

The goal is 10. Let's see how close I can get.

Ive been doing a lot more of this. On new opportunistic buys, it has to have a destination or part out, or i wont buy. As you develop an eye for the good stuff, you will find it. I just saw a mid 1980s Ritchie MTB, i had to pass. Im already set on the keeper fleet, actually some of those need to go too.

collecting/acquiring goes beyond bikes. I have way too much vintage stereo, way too many LPs too. Once again, if you have an eye for good stuff, you will find it, continually.

Hmm, yesterday a work colleague asked if I wanted some bikes she found cleaning out her late mother-in-law's house. She described them as two banana seat kids' bikes, two 10-speeds, and one tall, modern bike. Of course I said yes. I like bike projects, particularly if it's too rainy or hot to ride over the summer. I'll likely end up donating them all.

I mean, yeah. This is all how it goes, for all of us. If anything, you get to be the intermediary between the previous owner and the co-op, and maybe help filter out what could be junk and what could be sellable.

Then again, wasn't there a guy whose co-worker had an 'old bike' he wanted to give him, and it turned out to be a well-preserved Cinelli SC? As most people have zero interest in this stuff, an old bike is an old bike, regardless of whether it is a Murray or a 60s Bianchi Specialissima.

I'm trying to think of things that I have an 'acquisition syndrome' for other than bikes. My wife would be a good one to ask. She could name all the obsessions! One is old vintage pipes (baccy). I have probably about 30-35, and while I enjoy the 'using them' experience, more often than not, I actually forget to! It's probably been 6mo. But my last acquisition was a wartime pipe that the soldier carved all the locations he had been on his way through Europe. Some pretty awesome names scribbled on that pipe...Omaha beach...Carentan...Rhine...

My wife has been remarkably tolerant of the ebbing and overflowing piles o' bikes in the back yard, as she knows we have our "core group" of bikes we'll keep foreverish and all the others will eventually go to new homes.

And so I don't have to mutter anything about the wall full of her collectible nesting dolls in the family room, and everyone's happy.

Thankfully, I am unbetrothed. I just have my adult sons who live with me and they don’t judge...usually.

So any reduction will be self initiated!

However, my latest angst is disappearing parts from disassembly. If a frame has a fixed cup left over, where the heck is the rest of the bottom bracket. I am pretty organized so I think it must be gremlins.

an old acquaintance passed recently, and a friend of his, I'm assuming tasked with giving away his stuff, reached out and asked me if I wanted his old German three speed. I actually said no! Can you believe it? My reply was "I have a very similar bike, so I'll decline, and I hope you find a nice home for it".

I call that growing up. At age 60 it's about time.

This is something on my mind as well, and why I really want to get these projects put together. I told my wife how happy I was that I didn't lose some little pieces to the Junker Allez as I was putting it back together, namely the little brave lever housing stops and the brake caliper barrel adjusters. This stuff just starts disappearing! Course, then I got out and get another new-to-me-bike! (but it is awesome)

Whoa! I did a double take there, 'did I take pictures of this and forgot I did?'

That's exactly what I was doing last weekend! Exactly! And then you turn it like you are shifting, and turn it back and the whole thing just loosens up on you. I might have a chance to get to the co-op to see if I can upgrade to 105 or something else. I've got a couple bikes in the garage w/ 105 shifters, but I don't like the idea of regressing by taking a functional bike and making it non-functional just to make a different non-functional bike, functional.

It's funny, because w/ a few bikes I've given away, I'm now thinking 'hmm, could have used a few of those parts'... oh well!

After selling two bikes 2 weekends ago, I finished up a Trek 820 Sport and it's up for rehoming thanks to Marketplace. I wasn't going to pick up another until the 820 sold but then a week ago I spied one destined for the trash truck and picked it up - 20" Specialized Hotrock. After teardown, good cleaning, and reassembly along with new grips and tires it is ready for a new home.

7 complete bikes (3 that I ride, 1 for the Mrs, and 1 for the Ms.)
1 project build for the Ms.
1 frame and a five gallon of parts that need to go somewhere beside my garage

You know, we are sort of like those 'animal rescue' people, except for bikes! It is a little different of course, but if the intent is to rescue and rehome, it is a worthy cause!

In other news, y'all would be proud of me. Went to the co-op the other day to find some small parts, and came upon an 'as found' Nishiki in great shape, nice gold color, MY size, and even had Suntour barcons. $40.

I passed!

Someone else will get a great deal, and I found just the right parts to rebuild the Midget for my son. Gonna have some fun this weekend. Also heard that the shipped bikes were safely delivered! Whooho!

Maybe I'll have the chance to get rid of one or two more this weekend.

I have started having the same thoughts when I see a bike at a thrift store. I'll leave it for someone else who might make better use of it than me filling up the barn.

Well, it turned out to be a good weekend thus far.

I powered through and got the Midget build to where I had a vision for it. The Midget is now officially my sons. He started expressing interest in riding some of my bikes, and would tool around on some of the smaller ones that I had (like the PXN-10 and such). The Midget made a lot of sense for him, because it is the smallest 'true' (as in, classic/vintage, horizontal top tube, lugged, etc) bike I have, and I was able to get the seat low enough for him with about an inch to spare. Ever since I bought it, I was so busy riding the thing, that I didn't even clean it or whatnot. Well, it got the full treatment over the last few days and I finally finished it. I gave it a modern cockpit, compressionless housing, replaced the cantilever brakes (don't favor them) for some mini TRP V-brakes I found at the co-op. Replaced BB and put on some triple LX cranks. Gave it an XT rd, and a few little other touches here and there, and here's how she came out:

My son LOVES the bike. I knew he would. It rides like $$$$, so much so that I was hesitant at first to give it up, but it was totally the right move. I knew if I loved it, he would too, and unlike the PXN-10 and other vintage bikes he's hopped on, it shifts easier and brakes far easier, so it is a more enjoyable riding experience.

I will no longer be counting the Midget in the totals for my bikes, although it will still reside in the garage. It also means that I also won't be riding it, either, as it is set up for him and that's how it will stay. I will say, however, that if he decides he doesn't want it anymore, or if I come across a slightly larger Miyata 1000, I will happily add one back to the numbers. Also took a bike/frame out of the garage, and right now, here is where we currently stand:

Next on the list for building is the Jungle Junker, which I have just about everything except that darn rear shift lever assembly. The co-op had no 6-speed shift levers, so I'll keep looking. I have the cable kit and chain, so I should really just finish what I can. Then I'd like to focus on the TdF, then the Sears Ted Williams Sport Racer. Then it will be 'battle royale' of the 52cms. My son has also really enjoyed the Peugeot PXN-10, but hasn't yet tried the Gitane. When the Gitane is built up, I'll get him on that as well and see what he thinks. If if rides anywhere close to what everyone else says about the TdF, then its gonna smoke PXN-10. I'd like to have one French bike that fits me, and if my son loves the Gitane more than the PXN-10, then I'll let him ride that one, I'll get rid of both Peugeots, and keep an eye out for a slightly larger TdF - and then we'll both have one I'll acquire another bike, but still be down -1, so it will be a total win!

I'm really curious how the Sears TW Sport Racer will ride. If it's ho-hum, out it will go. I'm also thinking the Trek 600 might leave as well, since I can't really categorize it, but it really is a great bike - it sort of does everything well. So if it does leave, someone is going to end up with a really, really nice riding bike.

I started the New Year with 32 bikes/frames, and we are now down to half that! It feels good. More than anything, it is freeing up mental space, and it feels SO good to wrap up projects. There are so many 'incompletes' just waiting around, languishing, or partially disassembled, it is overwhelming, losing parts is inevitable, etc. So its starting to feel really good getting a handle on some of this. I still have a LONG way to go, but we are moving in the right direction.
