the old saying: "STAY THIN, RIDE A SCHWINN, THE EXTRA WEIGHT WILL DO YOU GOOD! " is relevant and applicable for many bicycle riders that have never frequented bikeforums.net.

Who the hell cares what somebody else rides for exercise?
There are pedal pushers out there that will never ride a road bike as they have no desire to ride any other way except upright.

The only fools who care that such folks may ride ancient or generic low cost, new big-box store bicycles are proprietors and employees of local bike shops who feel threatened that they may be losing potential sales if any trend were to occur such that folks begin to consider more often than they currently do, OLD USED BICYCLES and heavier new low cost basic Big-Box Store bicycles. This is the sole reason that such fools repeatedly exaggerate the advantages and benefits of modern ultra light road bikes to this particular bicycle demographic which undoubtedly will see no benefit from these great technological improvements and light weight that do greatly benefit those who wish to ride racing style (road bikes) at a very fast average pace or ride with the A-group rides from the local bike shop or compete in triathlons, etc.

It is my own opinion that Mr. & Mrs. Average and Mr. & Mrs. OverFifty-Five are not well served by the local bike shops in the new product offerings from the relatively few manufacturers' lines being offered in upright city-tourist bikes which are simple and have just one, or a few or at maximum just several gear speeds.
Yes, though the major respected bike manufacturers offer relatively little in this product sector, I don't believe that most local bike shops would want the respected major bike manufacturers to produce more such product offerings because they prefer the significant product differentation from the style of bicycles that Wallyworld, Tar-jay, Dicks and other big box stores & internet websites currently offer. It is naturally more difficult to garner a significantly large retail price point on something that upon first look, looks very nearly identical to something that one can purchase at Tar-Jay or Wallyworld for $260 total everything out the door, including 9% state sales tax.
True, the assembly quality is usually poor to below average at the box stores but someone who has experience with bicycles can usually assemble such a big box store to such a high degree of quality IF ALL THE PARTS ARE INCLUDED WITHIN THE CARTON & THERE ARE NO SIGNIFICANT MANUFACTURING DEFECTS ON THE PARTS, FRAME, WHEELS, etc THAT ARE INCLUDED WITHIN THE CARTON.
Bicycles are SIMPLE! Basic bicycles are not at all complex. One can if they know what they are doing, assemble and tune a so called "BSO" from a big box store such that it will function adequately and reliably for at least ten years or 4000 miles. Certainly, the twist grip shifter may be a POS but that can be easily changed to something durable and reliable for very low cost assuming that you know what you are doing.......... It would certainly not be cost effective to pay retail parts and labor cost to improve such horrible oem parts on a wallyworld bike, but someone with an internet connection and Youtube can probably successfully replace the few horrible crappy oem parts and make that new wallyworld bike as good as anything with two wheels that any local bike shop has for upright slow riding cruising.

The Jimmy Buffett MARGARITAVILLE bikes or the NEL LUSSO bikes are super simple coaster brake cruisers and single speed cruisers with coaster brake and/or a front caliper brake. Someone can get adequate exercise riding with her Yorkie or whatever lil doggie in the wicker basket on the front handlebars. Just because there are some folks out there that might ride bicycles that are vastly different than what the typical bikeforums road warrior may ever ride does not mean that those other folks aren't enjoying themselves and getting exercise at the same time.
Not everyone needs to ride 40 miles at a 20mph average pace to consider that they got their exercise today.
As you can plainly see by the number of extremely fat and out of shape Americans today versus those in 1970, if you're an old enough fossil like me to remember back then. Heck, you've got a major tv ad campaign for a diabetes drug, where this super fat and out of shape young woman with a beautiful face dances for about two seconds and sings about lowering her A1C when she obviously needs to focus on singing about lowering her W-E-I-G-H-T and probably dancing more, walking a lot more and seriously sitting less and moving and exercising more. It is sad because at her size and weight, at her young age, it is unlikely that she has twelve more birthdays to look forward to unless she focuses on seriously getting in better health very soon.
If you can help someone in some small way, to some how get someone motivated and embarking on some sort of exercise, no matter how little it might be, if that person is enjoying it and having fun while doing it, they likely will continue on and that likely will be a very good thing for them.
Comfort , stability and SLOW RIDING is all that many people can tolerate.
Because, by your committment to dedicated riding on a daily or at least twice weekly basis for the past twenty-five plus years, you are in top physical condition compared to even the average "fit" American in your age group, you are so far advanced in your athletic ability and cycling ability compared to someone in less than average shape that hasn't ridden a bicycle since they were fourteen years old.

Hey, we shouldn't care what the heck the type of bicycles that "others" are riding.
Everyone can plainly see that a lot of Americans do need to pedal more, walk more, and get off of the couch more, and stop ordering the super-size super fat orders at the drive thru...

STAY THIN, RIDE A SCHWINN

or Ride A Helluva Lot Harder & Farther at A Faster Pace On Your 18 Pound Road Bike In Order To Get The Equivalent Amount of Exercise.......

.........Different strokes for different folks...................be a Masher or be a Spinner, be a Pedal Pusher, be a Wheel Turner, cranking those chains....
Whatever you do, get yourself out on a bicycle and encourage others to get on a bicycle too, even if it is a slow-poke heavy-weight upright cruiser that you'd never consider riding. Keep those two wheels turning.

Dr. Paul Dudley White, who by many is considered one of the pioneers of modern heart medicine, was President Eisenhower's main physician after President Eisenhower's first heart attack. Dr. White was a huge proponent of the bicycle as a getting in better shape exercise tool. He made President Eisenhower ride a bike as part of his rehabilitation and efforts to get in slightly better physical health.

There is nothing that I can find where Dr. White states that lightweight roadbikes are the best bicycles. I also cannot find anything that he wrote that explicitly states that any particular bicycle or bicycle brand provides a better tool for exercise. Ancient Schwinn owners manuals & catalogs had a general letter compiling Dr. Paul Dudley White's expert beliefs on the many positive health and exercise benefits of pedal powering a bicycle with your legs and feet. Though, Dr White's benefit summary was published in Schwinn owners manuals and in some annual catalogs, there is no indication that any particular brand's bicycle provided an advantage in health benefit / exercise benefit.

Just get on whatever favorite bicycle or whatever your favorite type of bicycle, and ride the damn thing & you'll have fun.
Stop worrying as you don't need everybody's approval............stop worrying as you can't please everyone so you gotta please yourself...
You don't need no lycra or spandex......you don't need no dropbars.....you don't need no brifters.........YOU DO NEED TO WEAR A HELMET
Wear a damn helmet on every bike! Why? Have You Ever Seen A Watermelon that has been dropped or smashed?
Your head needs protection because an unprotected head that bounces on the pavement will be like that watermellon.
A helmet can mean the difference from your loved ones gathering for your funeral or you gathering with loved ones next week for a birthday party, or bike ride or whatever.
Today's helmets are comfortable. Yeah, they will mess up your hair slightly but don't wear a helmet and you significantly hit your head on the pavement and you have perhaps a 46% to 64% probabilty of going lights out---D E A D... Its your choice but your loved ones will wish that you were wearing a helmet.
Be cognizant of where and when you ride! Share the road is the law but you're a dumb azzz if you push your luck riding on a road or thoroughfare that is notorious for wild drivers and excessive speeding......................You have to make practical decisions everyday on such considerations. Again, being 100% correct and legal is not worth the probable risk that you may end up 100% disabled or dead. Remember Bobby Fuller sang: I Fought The SUV but The SUV won............
Yes, you'll win in court if you do survive, but all the money in the world won't matter so much at all when you're paralyzed from the neck down.

Vintage Schwinn , there is no getting around the fact that cheap department store bikes are junk. I’ve had a few, and so have my kids. I am capable of fixing and adjusting things to squeeze out a little more function and durability. I’ve found they are still not worth their price, low as it is.

For casual, low speed riding, there are options besides WalMart junk. A guy doesn’t have to spend a whole lot of money and buy a really nice road bike to get decent quality, reliability, and usefulness. He just has to know where to look, and spend $500 or so.

Have you been to a local bike shop lately and seen what those major bike manufacturers are offering for commuters, family cycling, utility, fitness, and city path rides? There’s a better variety that at probably any time in history.

As for the est of the rant ... basically, an unrelated diatribe against everyone who has a nice bike and likes it. Nobody here said anything about a good or a bad bike, and expensive bike or a cheap bike .... someone said that a heavier, lower-geared, upright bike was better suited to a certain person's uses ... and NOBODY said there was anything wrong with that,.

Until you cam along and vented.

I hope the goods feeling lasts.

I knew a racer who did club rides on Raleigh Gran Prix with steel rims when everyone else rode Italian bikes and sewups to get a reasonable workout at the speed of the middle aged men whose best was years ago.

To the topic - there are plenty of people not comfortable riding fast in traffic, by parked cars, around pedestrians. Riding a bike that gets the heartrate up while riding at your preferred speed - isn't that a win? Isn't that bike serving better than a road bike?

I don't think anyone is saying the lady isn't better served by her current ride than by another ... it is people who are trying to extrapolate "Universal Laws of Bike Design and Usage" or "Rules of How to Ride" and such, which causes problems.

And of course, this was a @LarrySellerz ™ post so it was in fact designed to bring about controversy.

Otherwise we would all just take a deep breath, see the obvious, and say, "The bike you enjoy riding most and actually ride the most is probably the better bike for you."

LarrySellerz If your friend wants to go slow and get a more rigorous workout, I recommend one of these:

https://www.streetstrider.com/products/streetstrider8s

but not a new one; FB has a group where people rave about them and some people sell theirs almost new. Just don't get the 3-speed.

It will exhaust you, but you'll fall down rubber-legged with a huge grin on your face and as soon as you can breathe again, you'll get up and do it over. At least it had that effect on me, and I don't particularly like hard exertion, so I can't explain it. It probably comes from carving turns; the fun factor only applies outdoors. When I put it on its stationary trainer it instantly becomes murderously boring.

The whole point of this machine is to make you work a lot harder than you have to to get from one place to another--and it will take you longer to get there. They state that it's possible to "cruise" at 15-20mph, which is bushwah; the comfortable cadence range seems to be around 30rpm. So, if your friend wants to commute with it, she'll need to leave earlier to get to work on time.

There's a secret bonus in these things regarding hill climbing. I've found that when I'm on flat ground, my legs are doing most of the work and my arms are just kind of going along for the ride. Starting upgrade, though, I tend to attack the hill with my arms, and sometimes I actually shift into a higher gear (until my lungs burn out, at least).

Didn't you ever have a bike wife? A woman you ride with a lot but are not romantically involved with? I've had several. Some had husbands/boyfriends that were too fast for them (and me) to ride with. Some had men who didn't ride bikes. Even had a "harem" for a while. I was just one of the girls.

I suspect that the least trustworthy part of that equation is Larry. Based on what we know, the BF's dislike of him is probably justified.

She is afraid of going fast, so she is unable to get her heartrate up on flat ground with the road bike. This is an argument for a situation where a heavier slower bike being a better tool for working out than a specialized sports bicycle.
Yep. If her objective is to bike to work for exercise, then a clunkier bike is more exercise. Inexperienced bikers also feel safer on an upright bike than in a forward leaning road bike position.

Nope. she would get to work faster so the workout would be over sooner.

Larry may not be the only one who has trouble with this science stuff.

but not a new one; FB has a group where people rave about them and some people sell theirs almost new.

I've seen these things lol

I bought my comfort bike to ride SAFELY for pleasure and excersize. With a bolt upright posture, 26 x 1.9" city/hybrid tires, and 34 lbs of bulk with a bunch of accessories it certainly gives me a better workout at the same speed as a road bike. I will not compete with cars and trucks on streets that don't have room for bikes, where the cyclist looses if there is a problem, I'd rather be safe then right. So some of my riding is on sidewalks and MUP's. As such, my bike isn't the limiting factor for speed for about 75% of my riding.

I love the upright seating which is much easier on my hands, The smooth riding low pressure all terrain tires, and the comfortable seat with its suspension seatpost.

I switched bikes with an old friend riding a vintage Releigh road bike. His first comment was how much harder my comfort bike was to motivate. What surprised me about the tiny road bike tires was that on reasonably good roads, it had nearly as good a ride as the much wider tires on my bike. I also met a fellow with a beautiful vintage Giant road bike. I couldn't believe how much lighter this bike was then mine. It felt like it was 1/2 the weight.

If I where using a bike to cumute I would probably choose a nice hybrid bike like Giant's Escape or Fastroad that provides a nice balance between comfort and efficiency.
